FSA Students Receive Honorable Mention in the 2019 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
Three FSA students, Junsu H. (11th grade), Derek Z. (8th grade), and Zixin H. (8th grade), recently received Honorable Mention in the 2019 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards through affiliate partner, Savannah College of Art and Design. Junsu received Honorable Mention for Excellence in Writing, while Derek and Zixin received Honorable Mention for Excellence in Art.
"Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have recognized the exceptional vision of our nation's youth, providing a singular opportunity for students to be recognized for their creative talents. Since its founding, the awards have identified the early promise of some of our nation's most exceptional visionaries. Notable award recipients include artists Andy Warhol, Philip Pearlstein and Cy Twombly; writers Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote and Joyce Carol Oates; photographer Richard Avedon; actors Frances Farmer, Robert Redford, Alan Arkin and John Lithgow; filmmakers Stan Brakhage, Ken Burns and Ned Vizzini; and many more. The awards are structured so that student work is judged first at the regional level and then at the national level. All submitted works are reviewed by local professionals working in the visual and literary arts and receive Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention awards. Select award-winning works are also included in a regional exhibition." (https://www.scad.edu/admission/financial-aid-and-scholarships/scholarships/art-and-writing-awards)

FSA High School Students are still collecting Donations for "Hunger has no Religion" until May 20th!
The Hunger Has No Religion Hygiene Drive at FSA is going successfully. We have received a generous amount of donations from our benevolent students and parents. Everyone is excited to be a part of this worthy cause. Hunger Has No Religion is an organization dedicated to fight homelessness in Atlanta. It has helped hundreds of homeless people by providing hygiene care packages, including soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and toilet paper, to them. In order to encourage this good deed, this drive has been initiated by Ashi and Serene at FSA. Our booth at International Night increased awareness about this grave issue among parents, students, and teachers about this drive. People left with a sense of empathy towards homeless people and a determination to help in any way. So far, we have around 100 donations and our goal is to reach 200. We want to give a big thanks to all the wonderful parents, students, and teachers who have given immense support and encouragement. The drive will be ending on May 20, so please collect any extra hygiene supplies you may have at home. Each item collected goes a long way to provide essential and basic hygiene to one who does not have access to this vital necessity.
Thanks,
Ashi

Home Visits; A Great Activity for Your Student, No Matter Their Grade Level!
Here is some feedback from our parents:
- “Early in the school year, a group of teachers took the time to come to our home to meet us and discuss the school program with us. That event brought us back to the time in which schooling was a true partnership between parent and teacher and reaffirmed in our minds that FSA truly cares about the development of our children”
- “We even had two teachers visit us at our home. They were a pleasure to meet and we could clearly see how much they enjoy teaching students.”
- “Thank you very much for your visit and the chocolates yesterday. We enjoyed having you over very much. I also want to thank you for turning math from the most complicated and somewhat scary subject into one of our most favorites.”
- “We all enjoyed your visit last night to our home. It was such a pleasure to informally get to know both of you. My son thought it was really cool that two teachers came to his house. He talked about it the whole way to school this morning in carpool. Personally, I admire the dedication you both have for your jobs. It makes a big difference in a student’s attitude toward school. Your visit left no doubt in my mind that FSA was the right decision for my son.”
- “I just wanted to write on behalf of my husband and I and thank you for visiting our child. He loved having you both come and visit. We appreciate the level of caring and attention that you have consistently shown our family. It is rare to see such a dedication from teachers for their jobs. We can tell that you love teaching and you care for our children. Thank you for visiting our child when he was not feeling well.”
How can I schedule a home visit?
Very simple.
To schedule an elementary school home visit: Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
To schedule a middle or high school school home visit: Simply email sduman@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Mr. Duman will be in touch to confirm final details.
Depending on our teacher’s availability, at least two teachers will be together to visit our students and parents at their homes. The best times to schedule a home visit are weekdays after 5:00 pm, and anytime during the weekends, except Sunday mornings. For any questions you have about this program, send an e-mail to homevisit@fultonscienceacademy.org
