A note from the CIA director - Barb Steinseifer
Thank you to all staff for “jumping” on the Thinking Map bandwagon. It was great to go through the hallways and see all the amazing “circle maps” that the students created over the past two weeks. I am hopeful that you have been able to find a place to post the maps in your classroom. During the next two weeks (Sept. 10-21) we will move to the second map; the “BUBBLE MAP” which is a describing map. That does not mean that we forget about the “circle map. Even though we will be introducing and teaching how and when to use the “bubble map”, students should be encouraged to use the “circle map” when defining in context.
Primary and Elementary
Use the recommended activities below. Then continue to use the map throughout the week in a variety of content applications, slowing releasing the responsibility for constructing and using the maps with students.
Day 1 Introduce the BUBBLE MAP to students by writing your name in the center of the paper. Draw a circle around your name. Outside the circle, write words or draw pictures to describe yourself: physical traits (short hair, brown eyes), personality traits (happy, friendly) and characteristics (intelligent, athletic). The words you write should be describing words/adjectives. Then draw a circle around each word and draw a line from the word to your name (center circle) to show how the terms are connected to the topic inside the middle circle.
Day 2 Introduce the BUBBLE MAP to students by reviewing the map you created with them yesterday about yourself. Ask them to create their own map about themselves using their own adjectives that describe them as a person. Provide them an opportunity to share their maps in a small group or with a partner. Then have them write a sentence about themselves using one or two of their descriptors.
Day 3 Use the BUBBLE MAP with the whole class to describe a character in a story that you have read during a read-a-loud. Complete the map together as a class.
Day 4 Review the BUBBLE MAP you created yesterday, adding new ideas from the class. Write one or two sentences (as a class or in pairs) using the descriptive words you generated on Day 3.
Day 5 Use a BUBBLE MAP in any content area. Create one together as a class and then have students work with a partner to create their own map. The teacher should assign the topic/s to be mapped. Make sure that students are using describing words/adjectives to describe the word/term in the center circle.
Day 6-7 On Day 6, work with students to create a BUBBLE MAP on one topic that they learned about last week. This should be a whole group activity. On Day 7, students should create a BUBBLE MAP with a partner (topics could be their choice or write a topic on a piece of paper and ask students to choose a topic). Partners should create their map and be ready to share with the class on Day 8.
Day 8 Students should be prepared to share their BUBBLE MAPS with the class.
Day 9-10 Students should be ready to create a BUBBLE MAP independently using a student generated topic or a topic of your choice. Find time to share with each other or post them for everyone to see.

(Just an example, feel free to have your own ideas)
We're trying to get details ironed out, so please send me an email if you'd like to participate.

PTO news
Most recently, PTO has agreed to donate $500 to our PBIS program.
In August, Ga-Ga Pits will be installed for both Primary and Elementary!
In addition, the PTO is taking the liberty of helping beautify our school by paying for quotes and murals to be painted in our school! There will be a quote by the gym that many of you have asked for, amazing murals in the library and the hallway outside the library, and the student washrooms will be given some TLC. Be on the look out for these amazing additions to our learning environment! So exciting! If you see a PTO member, please stop them and SAY THANK YOU!!! :)
