The Lumberjack Edge
Cedar Mill Elementary School
June 15, 2018
Dear Cedar Mill Community,
It is hard to believe this coming Tuesday marks the end of the school year. It has been a great year and am so happy to be a part of the Cedar Mill community! Together we’ve learned much and shared experiences that will long remain with us in the years to come.
Special thanks to the contributions and partnership of each and every parent and family. We also appreciate the many volunteers who gave their time and energy in big and small as well as seen and unseen ways. The partnership between home and school is important and as a staff, we are so lucky to work with such a supportive, caring, and committed community of families.
I would also like to thank our hard working and compassionate staff members who continue to make a huge difference in the lives of Cedar Mill students. Their commitment is outstanding and our students are so lucky to have them. Thank you for providing rich, engaging, and well-rounded experiences for our students while fostering the joy, wonder, and curiosity of learning.
In closing, I take this opportunity to congratulate all students on your accomplishments this year. I wish you all a very happy, safe and enjoyable summer. My hope is for each of you to find time to rest, relax, and enjoy all the wonders of what summer has to bring. May you continue to explore, create, and get lost in many good books during your summer reading.
I look forward to seeing you all in August. To those of you who are leaving us for new places and chapters of life, I wish you all the best and hope that our paths cross again in the future.
Sincerely,
Amy Chamberlain
Principal

Cedar Mill Summer Office Hours
Prevent the Summer Slide
Did you know that kids could lose up to three months of academic progress over the summer? This is called the “summer slide.” Summer slide is when students forget some of what they have learned or slip out of practice of reading during the summer months.
Here are three tips from Scholastic to prevent the summer slide:
- Read at least six books during the summer
- Read something every day
- Keep reading aloud
The Beaverton School District has put together a list of great local summer reading programs to help students prevent “summer slide.”
Other great resources include:
- Summer School & Credit Recovery at District comprehensive high schools: (Aloha, Beaverton, Mountainside, Southridge, Sunset, Westview)
- ACMA Summer Academy 2018
- Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District Summer Camps and Classes
- Police Activity League Summer Camps
- Summer Day Camps at the Oregon Zoo
- Portland Children’s Museum Summer Camps & Classes
- Library Summer Reading Programs:
Summer Bond Work
In addition to wrapping up the rebuild of Hazeldale Elementary School, there are a number of projects from the 2014 Bond Program scheduled to be completed this summer. These include a domestic waterline replacement at Bethany Elementary School, security upgrades and playground repairs and replacements at several elementary schools and boiler/chiller replacements. Cedar Mill is one of the school receiving security upgrades this summer.
The projects will affect access to several schools. The District has made accommodations to house summer school and other programs in neighboring schools.
In July, demolition of the current William Walker Elementary School will begin. While the new school is rebuilt, William Walker students will attend school at the new middle school building on 118th during the 2018-2019 school year.
Visit the 2014 Bond Program webpage for more information.
A Special Message from your Cedar Mill Elementary PTC Board
Thanks to your generous donations to our annual Fun Run, the PTC Board in conjunction with feedback from teachers will be supplying the bulk school supplies needed for the 2018-2019 school year.
Buying many items* in bulk not only reduces the overall cost, but ensures consistency in quality and availability to ALL students. Additionally, it will allow teachers to build class sets of non-consumable items such as scissors to reduce the amount of waste from purchasing these items year-over-year.
To make school supply shopping easier we are also continuing to offer on-line ordering of school supplies through schoolKidz. Your order will be delivered to Cedar Mill Elementary School and available for pick up on Aug 23 at the Stop, Drop & Smile open house.
You can find the list of school supplies parents/guardians are to supply in the attachment, as well as ordering details from schoolKidz. The list will also be published on the school website. If you choose not to use schoolKidz, supplies can be dropped off at your student’s classroom at Stop, Drop, & Smile or on the first day of school.
Sincerely,
Cedar Mill Elementary PTC Board
*see the attachment for the list of items.
Have a Fantastic Summer from Safe Routes to School
It’s a great time to be outside walking and biking with family and friends. Whatever active mode you choose, find routes with sidewalks and low volume and speed; and, crosswalks or traffic signals.
Safety is everyone’s responsibility!
Drivers, as we travel through neighborhoods, around parks, trails or community centers, slow down to 20 MPH and watch for children at all intersections.
Mark your calendar for Wednesday October 10, 2018. It’s International Walk+Roll to School Day! Let’s see how many people we can get walking and rolling (bike, scoot, skate, bus). Stay tuned for more details!
Fun Run Corporate Sponsorship
Thanks so much for supporting the Fun Run at Cedar Mill last September. With your help we were able to raise record funds for the school and complete the Makerspace.
Once again this year the PTC is looking at using our corporate sponsorship support around the Fun Run to fund a special need at the school and featured project. Principal Amy Chamberlain has identified an important path for our school to create future-ready InnovatED Classrooms at Cedar Mill. The attached sponsorship packet outlines all the details and includes photos of the project. The “hardware” is essentially a large flat screen TV on a cart that integrates directly with both teacher and student iPads in the classroom. It allows for all sorts of innovative and student-led learning and teaching opportunities.
Volunteers Kylan Pimley and Lee Carson visited Oak Hills Elementary earlier this spring with Amy Chamberlain where each classroom has this set-up. Our Cedar Mill educators are excited to have the same opportunities at our school.
We already have a handful of repeat sponsors committing again this year, and we hope you’ll join us (and help spread the word among parents!) this year too! We’re asking for commitment by June 15, largely because we want our teaching staff to have the chance to get systems up and running over the summer with their classroom.
Registration forms went home with students last week, but if you need an electronic version, email waysandmeans@cedarmillptc.org if you have questions!
Thank you for your support!
