Is My Child Too Sick to Go to School?
Reviewed by: Elana Pearl Ben-Joseph, MD
·
I'm usually a good judge of when my kids are too sick to go to school or childcare. But other times — like when they're dragging but have no fever — I'm not sure. And the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic makes it even harder to know what to do. How can I tell when it's OK for them to go and when they should stay home?
– Allyson
Being sure that a child is well enough to go to school can be tough for any parent. It often comes down to whether the child can still participate at school. Having a sore throat, cough, or mild congestion doesn't always mean kids can't handle class and other activities.
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, though, health experts ask that families keep sick kids home. Even mild symptoms like sore throat, cough, or a headache can be signs of a COVID-19 infection that can spread to teachers or other kids. During the pandemic and after it's over, kids should stay home when they have symptoms like a fever over 100.4°F, diarrhea, vomiting, or trouble breathing.
When in doubt, check with the school. Schools have guidelines about what families should do during the pandemic if their kids get sick. It’s also important to report that your child is sick, so the school staff can check to see if others might have been exposed to your child.
As for other types of infections, chickenpox sores should be dry and crusted over before kids go back to school (usually this takes about 6 days). Kids with strep throat need a dose or two of antibiotics first, which can mean staying home the day after diagnosis (or possibly longer). Other contagious infections — like rubella, whooping cough, mumps, measles, and hepatitis A — have specific guidelines for returning to school. Your doctor can help you figure this out.
Lice, scabies, and ringworm shouldn't keep kids out of school. If the problem is found by the teacher or school nurse, the child should stay in school until the end of the day. Kids who get their first treatment after school should be able to return to the classroom the next morning.
You know your kids best. A child who has the sniffles but hasn't slowed down at home is likely well enough for the classroom. But one who coughed all night and had a hard time getting up in the morning might need to take it easy at home.

Spartans & Olympians
6th Grade Spartans
Here are you Student of the Month and Citizenship winners for the Spartan team for the Month of December. Winners were given a non-uniform day, a certificate, and a medal!
Pictured Right to Left:

Student of the Month
Each month every 6th grade teacher will choose a student for any of the following reasons; someone who has been working hard in class, has shown growth and improvement in the content area, someone who is responsible and a good role model for their peers. We will have a short assembly at the end of the month and students will receive a certificate, medal and a non-uniform day bracelet. Parents of the recipients will get a notification from their child’s teacher so they can attend. During this assembly we will also recognize the Citizenship award winner who is given to a student who is unanimously chosen by the teachers who demonstrates leadership, good character and great effort in all areas.
Odyssey & Voyagers
The Odyssey Team will begin 2023 with several exiting learning opportunities.
In Mr. Varner’s science class, students will continue on their journey of learning about energy transformations. They will apply the knowledge of potential and kinetic energy to real life applications.
In Miss Johnston’s social studies students will continue to learn about Kansas history. One topic we will examine includes “Early People on the Plains”. This includes the first people to live on the land now called Kansas as well as European explorers from Spain and France. Another topic is “American Exploration and Expansion” which looks at explorers such as Lewis and Clark, Zebulon Pike, and Stephen H. Long.
Our ELA teachers, Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Rodriguez will lead students in a study of the novel, “The Outsiders”. Students will read the book and complete several engaging activities associated with the study of S.E. Hinton’s classic novel. “The Outsiders” tells the story of Ponyboy Curtis and his struggles with right and wrong in a society in which he believes that he is an outsider.
In Ms. Camacho’s Connect classes will create parent teacher conference presentations that showcase the students. They will educate their parents on their learning and personality styles along with career interests. They will also share with their conference guest how they are doing in each of their classes and explain the content they are covering. Their presentations will also include some personal information such as hobbies and favorite activities.
Math teacher Ms. Figueroa will instruct students in dividing and multiplying rational numbers.

STUCO
It’s nice to see you again DCMS! Welcome to the year of 2023! Since it is the start of a new year, STUCO has nothing planned for the month of January so everyone, even you can just sit back, relax and embrace the new year. All we STUCO members have to say is thank you for the people that attended the Snowball Dance and the people who participated in last year’s dodgeball tournament. The words “last year” makes it seem that it was a long time ago huh? Welp, that’s all I had to address for the month of January in the year of 2023. Have a great day or not, the choice is yours.
