In math this week we spent a lot of time learning strategies to round! We learned how to use place value and a number line to round and used what we know about addition and place value to estimate sums. The children did really well with this skill which can be tricky for third graders. Next week we will continue to practice how we can round numbers and make numbers more compatible to estimate sums. We will take our quarter 3 I-Ready assessment and will review the different skills and concepts learned in unit 8. Our unit 8 assessment will be on March 10.
Next week in reading, we will continue our study of legends and will read a legend of Davy Crockett and John Chapman. With our read alouds, we will review comparing and contrasting, main idea and point of view!
In writing this week, we worked hard on adding supporting details to our informational writing piece. We discussed the importance of organizing our information and adding transitional words. Next week we will finish adding supporting details and will learn different ways to write an introduction and closing by looking at different mentor texts.
Books we Enjoyed Together Last Week!
This week in social studies, we learned about their continent of North America and its history. We read about ancient cultures such as the Olmec, Maya and Aztec, as well as more recent American Indian cultures. The students ended the week by using a Venn diagram to compare and contrast two of the ancient cultures.
Next week we will focus on science and will begin our new unit on weather and climate. We will learn that:
- weather occurs constantly, while climate is average weather conditions of an area taken over a long period of time
-scientists record weather patterns so they can make predictions about future weather and identify changes in climate
- natural hazards, such as floods, hurricanes, tornados, droughts, blizzards, and landslides, cannot be eliminated, but people can take steps to reduce their impacts.
