Spotlight on TRIO
TRIO Upward Bound and TRIO Talent Search are programs that prepare students for higher education through various enrichment courses during the school year and the summer. TRIO also provides intensive mentoring and support for students as they prepare for college entrance exams and tackle admission applications, financial aid, and scholarship forms.
Our Caldwell TRIO students pursue placement in post-secondary schools which could include a college, university, trade, technical, or proprietary school.
TRIO students receive support and guidance in:
- High school course planning
- Study skill building
- ACT/SAT preparation and fee waivers
- Career information
- Service learning
- College campus visits
- College fairs
- Financial literacy workshops
- Admissions applications assistance
- FAFSA workshops and completion
- Scholarship application completion
- Access to college application fee waivers
Earlier this summer, Julissa Hernandez Alejandre, now a Senior at Caldwell High School, attended a fully-funded five-week summer institute at Princeton University, designed to prepare scholars for admission to the nation's most selective colleges and universities.
"I never thought I would be on a campus like Princeton," said Julissa. "I think it reassured me that I am going to be okay if I go far away for college, and it's something that pushes me to apply to more selective institutions. I know I was on Princeton's campus for a reason, and I can be on other campuses like that again."
For more information about TRIO, please contact Josh Engler or visit the Talent Search website.
Julissa was one of only 100 public high school juniors from across the United States to be named a Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America Scholar.
Mr. Josh Engler was named the High Education Advocate of the Year by the Idaho Association of College Registrars and Admissions Officers.
Doctor for a Day
Earlier this month, students at Caldwell High School had the opportunity to work with five doctors from Full Circle Health through the Doctor for a Day Program. The program events are made up of hands-on stations such as teaching physical exam skills, patient interviewing techniques, and suturing. Students in CNA, Pharmacy Tech, Medical Assisting, Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Rehabilitative Sports Medicine classes were able to learn from real-life medical professionals regarding the lungs and respiratory system.
“Having students experience just a glimpse of what they will learn, how the doctors interact with patients, and how they interact with the population is beneficial for students,” said Dr. Sarah Gerrish.
The goal of Doctor for a Day is to inspire and encourage students in underrepresented communities to consider medicine or other healthcare careers.
“We expanded the University of Washington’s Doctor for a Day Program into Idaho. We have used their formatting to bring the residents into high schools where there are underrepresented students in medicine to get them excited about healthcare,” said Dr. Gerrish.
Right now, Caldwell High School is the only school in Idaho offering this experience. They are working on having three more sessions this year on different topics.
Mystery Science
Science explains the mysteries of our world and Caldwell elementary students experience a broad range of scientific phenomenon through Mystery Science.
Mystery Science allows students to work on the five E-Model of science. It allows them to engage, explore, explain, extend, and evaluate the topic and uncover the mysteries of science for themselves.
"I think this program (Mystery Science) solidifies our science instruction and aligns with the Idaho Content Science Standards," said Elizabeth (Betty) Prall, District Elementary Science Coordinator.
This program extends into other content areas like STEM, math, and analyzing data and charts. It also extends into the vocabulary piece that students can use in reading and writing.
Caldwell Student selected as a member of State Superintendent Ybarra's Student Advisory Council
Nicholas Mendez from Caldwell High School will serve as a member of State Superintendent Ybarra's Student Advisory Council. Nicholas was one of 13 students selected from the nearly 60 students who applied.
"I feel like me being an underclassman gives hope, and I think it tells other underclassmen you don't have to be a Senior to be doing things; you don't have to wait," said Nicholas. "It's good to be patient about some things, but sometimes you're able to get work done now."
Nicholas is also a member of the Mayor's Youth Advisory Council in Caldwell and participates in the TRIO Upward Bound program. Nicholas will be a strong advocate for the youth of Caldwell and for the youth in our state.
The Legacy Program is back in Caldwell
The College of Idaho Men's Basketball Legacy Program is back!! The Legacy Program encourages our elementary students to serve their families and volunteer in our community. Students are recognized by the College of Idaho Men's Basketball team at one of the Yotes' home games. The Yotes will be visiting each elementary school this month to cheer on the students and invite them to join in the Legacy Program.
The College of Idaho is hosting their Meet the Yotes Night on Thursday, October 27, 2022, from 7:00-8:00 pm at the JA Albertson Activities Center. It’s a free event that connects everyone with the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Guests will get to see live scrimmages, skills challenges, and potentially win some prizes. ALL K-12 STUDENTS THAT ATTEND WILL RECEIVE A FREE VOUCHER to redeem at any of the C of I games this season.
Caldwell Youth Forum
After a two-year absence, the Caldwell Youth Forum, hosted by The College of Idaho, is back and was a great success. Students from Caldwell High School and other area high schools came together to celebrate an exchange of ideas, ideals, and forward thinking to further advance established initiatives about campus culture.
The 60 students who were selected to attend this year’s Forum are the recognized leaders in their schools and now have the responsibility to share what they learned from the Forum with their peers.
As a component of the Caldwell Youth Master Plan, the Caldwell Youth Forum seeks to provide resources for our students to help them create a learning environment in which they have elements of ownership and responsibility. Together, as a community of learning, we can reach the outcomes our students deserve.
Congratulations to Caldwell High School Boys Soccer
The Cougars defeated Bishop Kelly in the 4A District Championship and punched their ticket to the State Tournament next week. The Boys Soccer Team heads into the State Tournament undefeated.
We would also like to congratulate the JV Boys Soccer Team for winning their District Tournament last weekend. They came away with the victory after defeating Vallivue in the Championship Game.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Communication between Parents/Guardians and Teachers is vital in helping each child succeed.
This year, conferences will be held in a variety of formats to accommodate all of our families. We are able to meet in person or virtually. Please work with your child's teacher(s) to identify the most convenient option for you. Our teachers strive to meet with each parent/guardian of their students during October.
