A Matter of Balance Starts June 3
Wesley is set to host its first “A Matter of Balance” class starting June 3 for 8 weeks. The class is full at this time and has a waiting list. Since this class filled up quickly, there is a good possibility we will host another class in the near future. We can all benefit from knowing how we can keep ourselves safe in our own homes. I have yet to hear anyone say they can’t wait to go to a nursing home or assisted living facility. Although that may become a necessity for many of us, learning ways to stay safe at home as long as possible is usually preferable. So, look forward to information on future classes and we hope many more of you will decide to attend once you find out how much fun it was for our first group. The classes are open to the entire community, not just to our own church. Karla Cazer, the Sanford Faith Community Nurse Coordinator, has told me that every class they have held so far has had a waiting list so I’m thinking these have become pretty popular. Aren’t you glad we are involved in this at our church? I know I am.

News from Wesley Neighborhood Outreach!
WNO News:
The rummage sale this month was a huge success! We had people come in who gathered clothes for two families that lost everything in fires. There were people gathering clothes and toys for foster children. What a blessing it is to be able to help the people in our neighborhood and raise money for our campers. As of May 15th, we have raised $3,465.56 during this rummage sale. This will be added to last year's proceeds, and we will be able to send quite a few kids to camp. We are so excited!! Be sure and get your kids signed up. Pastor Manuel has more information on this. A huge thank you to Mary Poppenga for all her many hours of work, for all the volunteer workers and bakers that made this such a success.
Abby has been very busy getting things ready for vacation bible school that will be held June 14th through 17th. Be sure and get your children registered. There will be a train load of fun!! Contact Abby or the office for more information.
Our softball team is playing on Monday evenings. The schedule is in the office and in last month's newsletter. Rumor has it that they have a lot of fun! Thanks Doug for making this a great activity for our church.
The NIghtwatch Canteen served on May 9th. Thank you, Vicki and all the volunteers that help make this program a success.

Welcome Back, Summer, it’s time to Camp!
Summer is better with camp and we’re so excited to see you soon at your Dakotas and Minnesota United Methodist Camps.
NEW Summer 2021 COVID-19 Safety Protocols & Procedures
As we prepare to welcome you back to camp this summer, we’d like to share with you the ways we’ve modified our protocols and procedures, before and during camp, to help keep everyone at camp safe and to do our part to control the risk of spreading COVID-19.
Our protocols and procedures are based on current safety information and are subject to change. Please know that we’ll continue to pay close attention to COVID-19 conditions and will update any modifications as we receive new guidance. It’s important to stay connected with Dakotas and Minnesota Camping during this time and information will be shared regularly through social media, email, and website updates. Please check back regularly for the most up to date information.
Two important pieces of information are needed before camp begins:
1. Summer 2021 COVID-19 Healthy Camper Survey – all campers and volunteers are required to complete the “Healthy Camper” survey prior to the start of camp. A link to the online survey will be emailed to you four weeks prior to the start of your camping event. Be sure to complete this survey as soon as possible and no later than three weeks prior to your arrival at camp. Planning for a safe and healthy time at camp starts at home. This survey helps our staff gain a better understanding of camper health and COVID-19 exposure and history.
2. For the 14-days prior to camp, we are asking campers and volunteers to be intentional about limiting possible COVID-19 exposure. This includes:
a. Limiting exposure outside the house
b. Wearing a face mask when in public when appropriate
c. Not attending social gatherings when physical distancing is not possible or when others are not wearing face masks
d. Being diligent in handwashing and sanitizing
You will receive an email reminder when it is time to begin this 14-day period along with your standard two-week notice. We will also include a copy of the screening form that our staff will use to check-in all campers and volunteers upon arrival to camp.
We're grateful for the chance to share Christ, Creation, and Community with the churches and families of the Dakotas and Minnesota Conferences of The United Methodist Church. Your trust in us is a gift that we do not take for granted. Keeping our campers, volunteers, and staff safe is our top priority.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us at info@dakcamps.org, 855-622-1973 and/or visit www.dakcamps.org.
See you soon at camp!
From the Wesley Neighborhood Outreach - Camperships
This is what WNO has decided for Camperships this year. Please let me know if you have any questions.
1 WNO will pay up to $250.00 for any child going to camp for the Summer of 2021. One campership per child per summer.
2 WNO or Wesley will not be responsible for transportation to or from camp. Parents are responsible for taking to and picking up their kids from camp. Families or children attending camp can carpool, but this will not be arranged by Wesley or WNO.
3 No rainchecks for next year.
4 If you decide to register your child for camp, please use the code “wesleycamp” and once everyone is registered, WNO will let parents know how much they have to pay. Parents can pay their part to WNO, and then we can send one check to the camping office.
5 If you have already registered your child and had to pay a deposit, that money will count towards your out of pocket. If it less than the amount you as a parent are supposed to pay, you can pay the difference to WNO. If it is more than the amount you are supposed to pay, WNO will reimburse you the difference.

HyVee Cards
Don’t forget to call Doug or Marcy Bird (336-8828) to order your HyVee cards. You will help Wesley and United Methodist Women when you use these cards.
United Methodist Women
The evening circle will continue to meet in person at the church on June 17 at 7:00. Come join us for fellowship and a God-centered program. In spite of COVID, our UMW managed to meet our pledge to missions last year. That was a challenge since we didn’t meet for most of the year. What an amazing group of women this is! We also continue to support the Union Gospel Mission through donations
Parenting with Patience: Overcoming Anger in Your Home
Ashamed of your yelling?
Embarrassed by your outbursts at your children?
There is hope!
Parenting with Patience is a five-week video driven Bible study. It includes five lessons in online streaming videos (think Netflix). https://www.theapollosproject.com/
Pastor Manuel will hold this workshop at Wesley on five Thursdays starting July 1st from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
From the Parish Nurse
Since March we have lost several “saints” of our church, Sylvia Hermann, Earl Angles, and Rose Dorsman to COVID. As we remember these individuals and their families, let us honor their memories by continuing to be vigilant in our contacts with people outside our nuclear families. Continue to wear masks and socially distance when appropriate and don’t forget to wash your hands frequently. Those with compromised immune systems are particularly vulnerable.
These are among the health conditions that can cause to you to be immunocompromised.
1. Obesity – adipose tissue—fat—can inhibit immune function. It can take 42% longer to fight off the virus than non-obese people
2. Diabetes – high blood sugar is an inflammatory condition that tends to inhibit the immune response and raise the risk of infection
3. Cancer – cancer and its various treatments can reduce white blood cell counts and make patients more open to infection, while at the same time making it harder to fight any infection they to get.
4. Asthma, COPD, and other respiratory diseases – viruses love to attack the lungs, so people who have existing lung conditions are at risk of more severe symptoms when they do get sick
5. Autoimmune diseases – not only can an infection trigger a flare-up of auto-immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, or psoriasis, the treatment often involves immunosuppressive drugs that can raise you infection risk
6. Heart disease – based on early data, as many as 40% of COVID-19 patients who required hospitalization had existing cardiovascular disease
7. Transplant recipients – the drugs used to prevent rejection of the transplanted organ also renders the recipient vulnerable to infections because the drugs decrease the normal effectiveness of the immune system
We can protect ourselves, in part, by getting regular exercise and eating right. God calls us to protect the most vulnerable. Even if we feel safe ourselves, let us continue to protect those who can’t protect themselves
