IAHPERD Presidents' Update
10/31/16
Ben Robison - 2016-2017 President
First, Thank You to Justin Wiese & Caitlin Schaeffer, both from Pleasant Valley, as their terms on the the IAHPERD Board come to a close. I greatly appreciate all of their time, commitment, efforts, and dedication to making this organization great!
Next, a HUGE Thank You to Jennifer Peterson (Oskaloosa)! As Jennifer's time as Past-President has winded down, she deserves a huge amount a gratitude for all of the things she has done to progress the IAHPERD Organization. Jennifer was instrumental in many of the new initiatives within the Organization! It's not easy to hold the positions of President-Elect, President, and Past-President; Jennifer approached each with an incredible passion and positivity. Thank You, Jenn. I appreciate your mentorship, your leadership, and above all your friendship.
Next, a note of Good Luck and Support for incoming President Jodi Larson (Ankeny). Jodi is primed to lead this organization to heights we can only imagine. IAHPERD is in great hands with Jodi. I am so excited to work with Jodi! I'd also like to extend a Good Luck and Welcome aboard to Joe Burch (Pella) as our new President-Elect!
I'd like to recognize our new IAHPERD Board Members Jared Carder (Clear Creek Amana) and Chris Amundson (West Des Moines)! Their two-year board seats begin November 1, 2016.
I'd like to extend a Thank You to the sitting IAHPERD Board - Abby Goodlaxon (Okoboji), Travis French (Des Moines), Brett DeNeve (Camanche), and especially Kari Bullis (Williamsburg) for their continued efforts!
Lastly, Thank You to the Membership. I appreciate your support and I hope you all take advantage of the initiatives and programs we've established to move this Organization forward in the last year. I encourage you all to get involved...run for a board seat, sit on a committee, volunteer to chair!
Ben
Jennifer Peterson, Outgoing Past-President
The time has come for me to exit the IAHPERD board. The last 3 years have gone by really fast!!! In 2014, I had no idea what amazing experiences that were in my future, but I was excited and that was all that mattered. I had many goals for IAHPERD and for myself and hoping that I'd have a chance to make a difference and continue to move IAHPERD forward in whatever way was needed. So, here is a flashback of the last 3 years......
**Went to Washington D.C. at meet with members of congress to advocate for the PHYSICAL ACT which was passed as the ESSA.
**Attended LDC (a Leadership conference) in St. Louis with all the president-elects from all the state AHPERDs. (every state in the US)
**Attended 3 National SHAPE America conventions - St. Louis, Seattle and Minneapolis.
**IOWA delegate to SHAPE America in Seattle and Minneapolis.
**Collaborated, Danced and Laughed with the best professionals in our organization.
**Attended Central District SHAPE America Summit as a representative from Iowa for 3 years - 2013 -Steamboat Springs, CO, 2014- Rapid City, SD and 2015 - Steamboat Springs, CO
**Took the lead in organizing a top notch IAHPERD convention in 2015 at William Penn University in Oskaloosa.
**Created an AD HOC committee to finish the restructure of the IOWA AHEPRD board layout.
**Created an AD HOC committee to work on the path to IOWA Physical Education and Health Standards
**Pushed the use of technology within the IAHPERD Board. Used video chatting for board meetings
**Helped with the Student 1 day conference in Ankeny put on by President Ben, February 2016.
**Sent out monthly newsletters to all members and all AEA's.
**Worked tirelessly on communicating with all IOWA teachers, administrators and superintendents
**Shared the activities of IAHPERD on twitter for all #physed professionals to see.
**Attended the School Administrators of Iowa as a representative from IAHPERD.
**Attending in November the School Board Members of Iowa conference as an IAHPERD representative.
It's been a crazy, fun filled and sometimes stressful 3 years. I wouldn't trade it for anything!! I have lifelong friendships because of IAHPERD. I have friends/colleagues in other states and other countries. I have had more professional development then I could of ever imagined. I worked with the best board members!!!
If you have ever thought about being a board member or committee member or just MORE INVOLVED with IOWA AHPERD, now is the time. We are rolling with lots of awesome projects, collaborating with lots of states, have lots of grant money to be awarded and fabulous IHT SPIRIT software to bring you to the next level of technology in Physical Education.
Please consider getting involved. It's been the best decision I have ever made professionally.
Thank you for allowing me to be your president.
Jennifer Peterson
Jodi Larson, Incoming President
I am excited to be the Iowa AHPERD President for this coming year. I am in my 21st year of teaching and currently teach high school health, physical education and adapted physical education at Ankeny Centennial High School. I spent the first 10 years of my teaching career as a special education teacher and now have spent the past 11 years as a middle and high school health and physical education teacher. I have coached volleyball, basketball and softball at some point over the past 21 years. I am a mother of three active kids who range from a freshmen in college, freshmen in high school, and a 3rd grader. My husband Chad is an elementary physical education teacher so we keep it in the family.
As President I am excited to continue the work that the president’s ahead of me have started. My major initiatives will be pushing forward with our IHT initiative where we will begin gathering statewide data from our physical education programs, continuing to strengthen our advocacy for our profession across the state and with different stakeholders, and continuing discussions on state wide standards. Shape America’s 50 Million Strong initiative will also be a focus as we move through the year. I want to continue to push to grow our membership and show value in being an Iowa AHPERD member.
I am honored to lead our state organization. I want to see our members take an active role within our organization and begin to see more involvement through committees and volunteer opportunities. I hope to help our members feel that Iowa AHPERD is a family and a way to network with others within our state and across the United States.
Jodi
Joe Burch, Incoming President-Elect
I would like to share a little about myself. This is my ninth year teaching in the Pella Community School District. Currently I teach 4th-6th grade Physical Education and taught PreK-3rd grade Physical Education for six years. I am the head varsity high school wrestling coach and head eighth grade football coach. When I'm not at school I enjoy fishing, playing rugby, and spending time with my wife Allison and one and half year old son Emerick Joseph (EJ).
It is exciting to have the opportunity to serve YOU and IAHPERD as President-Elect. IAHPERD has had great leadership in the past and I hope to continue the success of our association. I am thrilled to be working closely with Jodi Larson, past presidents, and the IAHPERD board. My vision is to complete action plans related to advocating for our profession, utilizing technology within our association, and SHAPE America's 50 Million Strong initiative.
Thank you for all you do,
Joe Burch
