Service Opportunity-----Let Trisha know if you are interested.....cavinessts@appstate.edu
For the past two years, Horse Helpers, an equine rescue program serving the High Country and beyond, has been invited to local public schools to provide students a free educational opportunity, learning about equine rescue and promoting human-to-human empathy through human-to-animal education and contact.
The program involves reading a children’s book titled Chester’s Barn, a sing –a-long to “Run Chester Run” and a classroom Q&A about rescue and equine.Chester’s Barn focuses on topics like friendship, family, loss, and caring. After this, students get the opportunity to reinforce the ideas learned in the classroom through active-learning methods outside by leading two miniature horses—Chester and Hank. The leading program, which is great fun, is a paired activity with aHorse Helper volunteer. Each participating child receives his or her own copy of Chester’s Barn at the conclusion of the curriculum.
Program length varies between 40 to 50 minutes and has been presented to kindergarten through 6th grade—fun for students and teachers alike. In the Q&A and activity components, students are unaware that they are practicing methods to more successfully handle conflict, create community, and promote social justice.
We have been invited to Hardin Park (multiple times), Cove Creek, Avery County’s summer camp program, Crossnore Elementary, and Wilkes County’s Community In Schools. Additionally, the program has been presented at the Watauga County Library in Boone and Sugar Grove as well as two times at the Ashe County Library in West Jefferson. Last school year Hardin Park already had scheduled the Chester’s Barn program into the 2017-2018 academic year. They clearly found the event fun for children and teachers in addition to supporting children’s growth in important life skills.
