Level 2: Identify
Figurative Language Practice
Goal:
When given an example, I can accurately recognize and identify the seven types of figurative language on a consistent basis.
- simile
- metaphor
- alliteration
- personification
- onomatopoeia
- hyperbole
- idiom
Review:
Use the Figurative Language Presentation and your handwritten notes to review the examples of each type of figurative language and to see how figurative language is used in writing.
Practice:
See your teacher to get a set of the Figurative Language Identification Matching Cards. On your own or with a partner, practice identifying the type of figurative language used in each example. You should be able to justify your response with a reason ("I know that this [example] is personification because..."). Practice until you feel confident and review the ones that you struggled to identify.
Apply:
When you feel confident in your ability to identify the correct type of figurative language used, see the teacher for a Figurative Language Identification Practice Test. Fill this out as best as you can. When you are done, see the teacher for the answer key.
If you answer all of the questions successfully, you are ready to move on to the Figurative Language Identification Assessment. If you did not answer all of the questions successfully, see the teacher for a set of Figurative Language Identification Dominoes to further review and practice identifying the types of figurative language.
Assessment:
After completing the Figurative Language Identification Practice Test successfully, you are now ready to take the Figurative Language Identification Assessment to prove that you are ready to demonstrate your identification skills.
