AEA Reading Challenge Wrap-up
Thank you so much to all who participated in AEA's Iron Bowl Reading Challenge! Over 200 students completed the challenge and returned forms. Two student winners will be drawn from all the participants statewide. Special thanks to Mrs. Rhinehart and Mrs. Jimmerson for decorating the wall outside the library. Their handiwork was featured on the cover of the October 16th Alabama School Journal (pictured above).
Exploring the Catalog during AL School Library Week
October 9-13 was Alabama School Library Week (#ASLW17), a week set aside by the Alabama School Library Association to recognize and advocate for the role of libraries in Alabama schools. Our library lessons at WIS that week focused on searching and exploring the various features of our online catalog. These are skills that can be applied to searching Google and our Alabama Virtual Library databases.
Ghostly Activities in the Library
During the last two weeks of October, students enjoyed lessons on storytelling, featuring the ghost stories of Alabama native Kathryn Tucker Windham, author of 13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey. A display of spooky books in our "Once Upon a Crime" section offered plenty of choices for students who love all things ghostly.
Mrs. Lee's Choice
In addition to my new "Mrs. Lee is reading" signs, I also have created "Mrs. Lee's Choice" cards to place in the tops of my favorite books. This is one more way I can connect with students and cultivate a culture of reading.
Book Review - Rain Reign by Ann M. Martin
If this author's name sounds familiar to you, it's probably due to the dozens of titles in her ever popular Babysitters Club series (which as an aside, I remember reading voraciously as a child). But that is where the familiarity will end. Rain Reign, winner of a Schneider Family Book Award for artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences, tells the story of Rose, an autistic girl in a difficult family situation. Rose is obsessed with homonyms, to the point of giving her dog Rain a homonym name (Rain, Reign, Rein). She relies on pattern and routine and has a difficult time when those routines are broken. When Rain disappears, Rose must deal with one of her greatest challenges yet. Though her story is heartbreaking at times, Rose's persistence will inspire readers and give them insight into other children like her.
