Prendiville Catholic College
1 June 2017
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Everyone loves Prendiville Day.
A highlight of our year is Prendiville Day. It is a day of celebration and day of fundraising for a specific purpose, to support LIFELINK. The Mass, activities and fete stalls make it a fun day with strong purpose and the Variety concert is always entertaining and is a showcase of talent and students willing to give things a go.
A special feature of the mass was having Fr Renald celebrate the Mass. Fr Renald along with our amazing Chaplain Fr Joe engaged our students and staff in a beautifully prepared Eucharistic Celebration. We are always grateful to have committed priests working in our community. It is inspiring to see our young students connect with Fr Joe, Fr Renald and Fr Trouk who certainly meet students where they are at and are in tune with the signs of the times. High fives, meaningful prayer, reverence and celebration all defined our Prendiville Day mass which set a wonderful tone for our day.
I acknowledge the wonderful presence of our year 12 students on Prendiville Day. The spirit, colour and responsibility of our senior students is to be celebrated also. The spirit of the year 12 students usually sets the tone of our College in my experience. Prendiville Day gives our senior students the chance to STOP, relax and enjoy an alternative day on campus, just prior to their all important exams.
At the conclusion of Mass Aidan O’Sullivan and Will Preedy shared with our community that Prendiville Day went beyond the festivities of the day. The generosity of students through fundraising supported in full LIFELINK. They explained that LIFELINK supports many Catholic charities including:
- The Shopfront, which helps people who are homeless, sick or who lack food or money
- The Emmanuel Centre which supports people with disability
- Djooraminda supports Aboriginal children
- Centacare provides training assistance to help people to find work
I acknowledge the courage of Aiden and Will who volunteered to share their passionate message to our students about the importance of the day which sometimes can get lost in the activities of the day. Will and Aiden received great applause from our student body who responded with amazing generosity of spirit throughout the whole day.
This newsletter takes us all into a four-day long weekend and signals midterm. Please keep our senior students in your thoughts and prayers as they prepare for examinations. To the parents of our senior students, love them that little bit extra and exhibit that little bit more patience during this time. Have a safe and happy long weekend.
For your children,
Mark Antulov
Principal
EARLY DEPARTURES
If a student requires an early departure from school, the College must receive prior notification from a parent by either a direqt message, email or signed note to Student Administration as early as possible. Students are required to sign out at Student Administration on their departure from school.
Only in emergency situations are parents permitted to take their child out of school without previous notification.
YEAR 7 HOMEWORK HELP
Please be aware that the Year 7 Homework Help will not run on Monday 12 June. This is a consequence of Year 11 and 12 students sitting exams at that time. The Help sessions will start again on Monday 19 June when the senior school students resume normal classes.
JAPANESE STUDENTS
Over the past twenty years, Prendiville Catholic College has hosted visits from a group of Japanese students from Sagami Girls Junior High School. The visiting girls are billeted with Prendiville students' families. Those families that have participated in the past have found the experience very enjoyable. Many friendships have been developed and it is an excellent opportunity for our students to gain an appreciation and understanding of Japanese culture.
With the success of previous tours, the College will again host a visit of students from Sagami from Thursday 27 July to Tuesday 8 August 2017.
The students will undertake tuition at the College to improve their English skills with organised activities and sightseeing being arranged at the College. The visiting girls are aged between 14 and 16 years.
We are, therefore, looking for families to billet students for 13 days whilst they are at the College. We require families to host one or two students.
Families that can help by accepting students into their home will be compensated $350.00 per student.
If you can help by hosting a student, kindly contact Mrs Heather Downsborough on
9301 6221 before 9th June 2017.

YEAR 8 RETREAT - STEWARDSHIP
A huge thank you to the staff and students who participated in the Year 8 Retreat held on Thursday 18 and Friday 19 May.
The theme of this year’s retreat was ‘Stewardship’. As stewards of creation, our students had the opportunity to spend one day at Bramston Park where they participated in ‘Head and Heart’ activities. This program was designed to raise awareness of different perspectives on Creation, and the human person’s sacred responsibility of stewards of this gift.
With respect to the Christian Service Component of the retreat, students also spent one day at Kaarakin Cockatoo Conservation Centre and participated in service inclusive of:
- Tree planning
- Ground clearing
- Cleaning of aviaries
- A tour of the facilities and an opportunity to meet the various animals cared for at the centre
SALVATION ARMY DOORKNOCK LAUNCH
On Wednesday 17 May we attended the 2017 Launch of the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal at the State Reception Centre In King’s Park. It was a great chance to network and share ideas with many business and political leaders as well as fellow students and staff from a variety of Perth schools.
A massive thank you to Leah Massara, Abbey Knox, Beth Mantle and Emily Agostino for their participation in an educational and enjoyable morning and for representing the College in a distinguished manner. They discussed their role as part of the College’s Student Ministry team and heard about how other schools are engaging their students and communities in a variety of service programmes.
As we tucked into our delicious breakfast we heard from speakers about the work of the Salvation Army to help many people around the Perth area. Their core aim is to care for the least, the lost and the last in the community by providing 65 social programmes – ranging from emergency relief for families in crisis to accommodation for the marginalised in the community. We were all touched by the numerous heartwarming stories from those involved both in working on the front line to those who have benefited from the services being provided.

RED SHIELD APPEAL OFFICIAL DOOR-KNOCK
On Sunday May 28th a group of 31 students from all years met at Prendiville to door-knock to collect donations for the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal.
The students worked in pairs and collected in the suburbs surrounding the college on a fine and sunny May morning. After collecting the students returned to the College to count the money they had raised and partake in a feast of lollies, soft drink and chips as a reward for their efforts.
In the end they raised $1342.30 for the fantastic work of the Salvation army. Well done to all the hardworking students involved!
HOUSE MASSES AND HOUSE ACTIVITIES
Thank you to the House Coordinators and PCAs for their wonderful efforts in continuing to promote House Identity at the College. Mc Auley and Salvado House celebrated their respective House Masses, in a joyous and symbolic way. ‘Serving with Heart’, and ‘Outreach’ were the focus of these masses. Brigid, Chisholm, Francis and Romero House ran a mixture of sport, artistic and reflective sessions, that engaged our students in promoting their house themes of:
Compassion, Inclusion, Stewardship, Service, Liberation and Outreach.
SPORTS NOTICES
ACC Cross Country
Our final squad of 64 students has been selected and notified in preparation for the ACC Cross Country Carnival on the 1st June. The squad list has also been posted to the SPORTAL page on SEQTA. Thank you to all those students who have attended training through the 100K Club this term. It is unfortunate that the ACC revised the number of students from 8 down to 6 per age group this year thus some of you have missed out on places in that final team. To those students who have been selected, it is imperative you honour this selection through your attendance and performance at the carnival on Thursday.
100K Club
At this stage the 100K Club will continue to run following the ACC XC, however this will only be occurring on Monday and Friday mornings. This decision will be revised again towards the end of Term 2 based on attendance numbers. Any changes will be published in the Daily Notices and through the Newsletter.
Interhouse Surfing- Saturday 17 June
Registrations are now open for the Prendiville Surfing and Body Boarding Carnival. All students are able and invited to participate, however they must be a competent swimmer in Surf conditions. Students nominate via ResultsHQ. Instructions on how to complete this process are available on the SPORTAL page on SEQTA. Once registered, students must pay the $15 registration fee to the Finance Office before they will be added to the heat draws and provided a permission slip to participate.
This year’s carnival falls on the Saturday after the conclusion of our Sr Exam break. Sr students who are looking to compete must ensure they pay their fees, collect and return their permission slip around their exam timetable or they risk missing out on inclusion in the draw. The final date for registrations and PAYMENTS is Tuesday 13th June. To allow enough time for the heat draws to be finalised.

SSWA X Country Carnival
Last Friday 4 Prendiville students competed at the SSWA X Country Carnival at UWA Sports Park. Congratulations to Makayla Street (Year 8), Ben Hillen (Year 10), Jenna Newton (Year 12) and Owen Vorster (Year 12). Ben won a Silver medal in the U16 Boys Race completing the 6km course in 21:45.
OUTDOOR EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
The Outdoor Education Department has had a flying start to the term!
Our Year 10’s completed their Mountain Biking Unit with a challenging 20km ride through the trails up in Kalamunda.
The students started their assessment out on the skills loop, an 800m track stacked with obstacles, inclines, declines, mixed surfaces and of course the trees that magically grew legs and jumped out onto the tracks, causing some discomfort to our students. After riding 4km worth on the skills loop, students demonstrated enough skill and confidence to tackle the downhill trails of the Calamunda Camel Farm.
Our students were fierce and daring. They completed 16km on the blue rated trails, with the names of “ Rocky Boboa” “ Drago” and “ Mother-in law” just to name a few.
Totalling 20km by the end of the day, students were able to start mentally preparing themselves for the challenges their Expedition will implode on them in Term 4. All students agreed, the number 1 rule of Leave No Trace: Plan and Prepare. Is exactly what they will need to do regarding both fitness levels and fluid/ food intake for the day.
Our Year 9’s kick started their Term 2 with their Prussiccing Practical Assessment (week 2). Students were able to apply their knot tying abilities and put it into practice! All were able to complete the challenge of climbing to the roof of the gym using their own roping skills and core strength. A tough task, though all should be pleased with their accomplishments.
The year group are continuing with their Roping unit and will be completing their Indoor Rock-Climbing module. Students are given a taste of indoor Rock-climbing and bouldering at the Joondalup Climbing Centre. Good luck to all year 9’s that attempt the ODE Bouldering Challenge, Rope climb and Mechanical Climb: 100 Club records!
The Year 8’s have started their preparation for their Camp in Week 9 of this term. Fire building has proven to be popular with the students however, the smelling of bush smoke afterwards took some to getting used too. Students are currently practicing putting up tents and will soon move onto using the trangias. These are small trekking portable cooking stoves that the students will be using on their camp.
Permission slips, medical forms and equipment list will be issued out in the coming weeks. Should students ‘accidentally’ lose these, they will need to contact their ODE Teacher for a replacement.
BIOTECHNOLOGY IN ACTION
This week the Year 12 Human Biology classes had the opportunity to use the “Biotech in a Box” kits courtesy of Murdoch University. Students got to use sensitive equipment and simulate Gel Electrophoresis, a technique commonly used in modern criminal forensics, detection of genetic diseases and counselling. The use of such modern technology really allowed the students to gain hands on experience of “cutting edge" techniques and learn more about the practice of Human Biology in the society. Students also had the opportunity to analyse data and draw conclusions on the relevance of these techniques as tools of analysis.
USA SCIENCE TOUR
The USA Science Tour wishes to say thanks to our two wonderful sponsors of the trip. These sponsors donated funds to help with the purchase of the tour jackets. These donations went a long way to help with the tour costs and we sincerely appreciate it!

YEAR 12 EARTH AND ENVIRONMENT SCIENCE EXCURSION TO BELLS RAPIDS
Our Year 12 EES students spent the day visiting Bells Rapids to learn more about the Geology of the area. Among other things, this area shows evidence of ancient metamorphosis of rocks, including changing granite into gneiss. It also shows evidence of ancient hydrothermal activity with quartz veins in the bedrock. Did you know that the Perth hills were once mountainous and over millions of years, they have weathered to the height of today?
The students were intrigued and took many notes for their exam preparation. They worked so diligently that there was even time to visit the Chocolate Factory in the Swan Valley!

INTERHOUSE ARTS COMPETITION - SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE
On Wednesday 17 May the Interhouse Dance Competition “So You Think You Can Dance” was held. Numerous students auditioned for the chance to represent their house in the week leading up to the competition. The successful acts that were chosen to represent the six houses included:
Brigid: Montana Howlett (Year 8)
Chisholm: Olivia Hauser (Year 8)
Francis: Sienna Mackay (Year 9)
McAuley: Ellie Bogdanich (Year 8)
Romero: Brooke Elphick (Year 8) & Rachel Elphick (Year 9)
Salvado: Faith Ward (Year 9)
As soon as the theatre doors opened at lunch time, seats filled rapidly, completely filling the auditorium, with students even sitting on the floor and in the aisles! It was clear that the audience members were very excited to watch the dance battles on stage and support their house representative with extensive cheering and applause. Hosted by the Prendiville Arts Captain; Hannah Dans, Dance Captain; Chloe Elphick, and Dance Prefect; Amelia Nutini, the show ran seamlessly with all dancers performing astonishing routines. The judges had a tough job ahead of them and eventually managed to award the following places:
1st Place: Chisholm House – Olivia Hauser
2nd Place: Francis House – Sienna Mackay
3rd Place: Salvado House – Faith Ward
Well done to all students involved. We cannot wait for the 2018 Interhouse Dance Competition!

YEAR 11 MARINE AND MARITIME CLASS
In Week 4 the Year 11 Marine and Maritime class ventured down to Augusta for their three day camp. Set down south in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, the students had an awesome time exploring the coastal environment of this area. Flinders Bay Caravan Park was a perfect place to stay. From here students had access to world class snorkelling and fishing locations. After much effort the students unfortunately couldn’t catch the elusive salmon. The class also had the opportunity to visit Cape-Leeuwin Light House and Hamelin Bay. A Big thank you to Mrs Anita Relo-Fisher and ex-student Robbie Colbourne for assisting with the Camp.
