GROWING GREATNESS through sharing and showing their knowledge...
Another "Principal's Challenge" has started this week. We are encouraging students to complete and PASS at least 8 iReady reading lessons from now until Sunday, March 17th. Students may complete these lessons at home, if they wish. They also receive time, in school, to work on the lessons each day. The Principal Challenge Reward will take place on Monday, March 18th. Students will participate in some fun stem activities. These include: rubber band launching, basketball catapults, and noodle buildings. Help encourage your child to complete the lessons and join in on the stem fun!
Parents of students in 2nd - 5th grades:
State testing season has arrived. Second and third graders will be taking the IREAD-3 assessment next week. There is no stakes in this assessment for our second graders, but if they pass, they do not have to take it again in third grade. It is very important that third graders take this assessment seriously and do their best. Please make sure that students get plenty of rest and eat a nutritious breakfast each day.
The ILEARN assessment starts on Monday, April 15th. All 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will be taking the ILEARN assessment. More information will come home later in March.
Thank you for entrusting us with your child's education,
Stephanie Leasure

Front Office Guidance from Mrs. Hilterbrand and Miss Myers:
Field trip season is right around the corner. Chaperones MUST have an u to date background check in order to attend the trip. If you are unsure about this, you may call the office and we can check to see if you have a background check on file or need to apply for a new one. Please know that it does take at least two weeks for these to process once they are turned in.
Please help your child to keep track of the everchanging temperatures each day. This will help them to dress accordingly for outdoor recess, including jackets, if needed.
Spring pictures are this Thursday. Only those students whose parents order pictures online will have pictures taken. ONLINE ORDERS only.
If your child is ill, please make sure to call your child(ren) in sick to school. You may call before school hours and leave us a message, if needed. Our number is (260) 347-1354. If we do not hear from you, we will call to check in on your child. Please remember the 24 hour rule, they should be fever free, vomit free, and diarrhea free for 24 hours before returning to school.
*Please make sure to call our office BEFORE 2:00 p.m. if you need to change your child's transportation on the way home for that day. This allows us time to share this information with both the teacher and your child before dismissal begins at 2:40 p.m. Your child's safety and making it home is our #1 priority. We appreciate you helping us with this!

Student Learning with Miss T
I wanted to take a moment to discuss with you the importance of fluency and its significant impact on their overall learning and development. Fluency, whether it be in reading, writing, or speaking, plays a crucial role in academic success and beyond. It refers to the ability to perform a task smoothly and accurately, with ease and confidence. Here's why fluency matters:
Reading Fluency: Fluency in reading is more than just the ability to pronounce words correctly. It encompasses factors such as speed, accuracy, and expression. A fluent reader can comprehend text more efficiently, leading to better understanding and retention of information. This skill is fundamental across all subjects and is a cornerstone of academic achievement.
Writing Fluency: When a child is fluent in writing, they can effectively communicate their ideas, thoughts, and feelings. Fluency in writing involves not only spelling and grammar but also the ability to organize thoughts coherently and express them in a clear and concise manner. Strong writing skills are essential for success in school and in various professional fields.
Speaking Fluency: The ability to express oneself fluently orally is equally important. Whether it's participating in class discussions, delivering presentations, or engaging in conversations, fluent speakers can articulate their thoughts with ease and confidence. Developing speaking fluency enhances communication skills, fosters self-expression, and boosts self-esteem.
Encouraging fluency in your child involves consistent practice and support. Here are some tips to help promote fluency:
Reading Aloud: Encourage your child to read aloud regularly. This practice improves both reading and speaking fluency as it allows them to work on pronunciation, intonation, and pacing.
Writing Practice: Provide opportunities for your child to write regularly. Whether it's journaling, creative writing, or academic assignments, consistent writing practice helps enhance fluency and proficiency.
Engage in Conversations: Have meaningful conversations with your child on various topics. Encourage them to express their thoughts and opinions freely. This not only improves speaking fluency but also fosters critical thinking and communication skills.
Provide Feedback and Encouragement: Offer constructive feedback and praise when your child demonstrates fluency improvements. Positive reinforcement goes a long way in motivating them to continue practicing and improving.
Your support and involvement play a crucial role in nurturing your child's fluency skills. By emphasizing the importance of fluency and providing opportunities for practice, you are setting them up for academic success and empowering them with essential life skills.
In Tune with Attendance and Safety with Mr. Perlich:
Attendance:
Sickness is hitting North Side Elementary as I guess it is everywhere else. Please communicate with the office on days your students will be absent. If we do not hear from someone, we will be making calls to verify the absence. Please refer to the EN attendance policy if you ever have questions as to why you are getting letters or being asked to come in for an attendance meeting. These meetings are a step in our protocol that is important to get information to you about your child and the importance of getting them to school. If you ever have questions, please call me and I would be happy to walk you through the process. Communication is an essential part of working together!
Safety:
March will be a month that we practice a lot of drills. A fire drill, lockdown and shelter-in-place will be ones that will be scheduled. Others may come up as an as needed basis. State Law requires all schools to practice these drills on a regular basis each month. We practice drills to make sure all staff and students are prepared in case we are ever faced with an emergency. We continue to look for ways to make our practices better. We take safety seriously and want to make sure your children feel safe while at North Side Elementary. If you should ever have questions, please feel free to reach out to me at jperlich@eastnoble.net.
The Nurse's Nook:
Other reminders:
- Your child must be fever-free, without fever-reducing medication, for 24 hours before returning to school. The same applies to vomiting and diarrhea.
- Please send a change of clothes in your child’s backpack for those occasional accidents or spills. I will do my best to provide your child with a change of clothes, but if I do not have the appropriate size, I will have to call home and ask for a change of clothes.
- If your child has clothes that they have outgrown, I am always accepting clothing donations!! This is how I keep my “extra clothes” stocked. I am always in need of pants and underwear, sizes 6-12. Don’t worry, clothes are always washed before I give them to students 😊
PTO Corner
Happy March! The North Side PTO is working hard to promote their second annual spring Read-a-Thon! The Read-a-Thon is an event that encourages children to become better readers and learners by nurturing a joy of reading. This is their LARGEST fundraiser of the year. Students will collect donations from sponsors and have one week to read as much as possible (from Monday, March 11, to Sunday, March 17). Please encourage your child to participate and gather as many pledges as you can. No amount is too small and all the money goes right back into our students and teachers!
Our goal is to raise enough money to fund our end of year field trips, provide educational supplies, have an end of year celebration, purchase recess equipment, and be able to grant teacher requests for their classrooms. We can succeed and accomplish this goal with your help!
Please follow North Side Elementary’s Facebook page for more information!
