EMPOWER ILLINOIS
Dear Tax Credit Scholarship Families and Supporters,
I know that this email finds many of you anxious and concerned about the upcoming school year and what will happen. First, I want you to know that you are not alone. There are more than 14,000 students on tax credit scholarships across Illinois as we speak—a program record. I also want you to know that Empower Illinois and our coalition have not given up the fight to reinstate the program in Springfield.
That is the reason that I write to you today, as there is still a chance that we can get the Tax Credit Scholarship Program back in May. If that were to happen, fundraising could begin in June to fund scholarships for the school year that starts in August. In order to maximize the chances of that happening, we need your help! We need you to call and email your legislator using this link and tell them to reinstate the Invest in Kids Act. This is especially important if you are a Black or Latino family. While more than 58% of our lifetime scholarships have gone to students of color, some legislators are believing lies spread by our political opponents that there are no or very few Black and Latino students receiving scholarships. This is not true, and we need you to speak up to tell your unique story.
This will be only the first step of our campaign to reinstate the Invest in Kids Act and we will be in touch with more opportunities over the coming weeks to advocate between now and May 31. One of the most important things you can do to help is to come to Springfield with us to meet with your state legislators. Please email our team member Chelsie Leffelman at chelsie@empowerillinois.org to arrange a date to come down. We ask that you do what you can and encourage other to do the same. Together, we can do this! Your kids are worth the fight!
Sincerely,
Bobby Sylvester
Executive Director of Community and Government Affairs
