3 Things to do this week...2 are just reminders...
Guidance to help with deadlines when data needs to be reported:
K: T1 should be entered by the week of 10/29 for both ELA and Math
1st: For ELA, Fry list done at the end of T1, other two should be assessed when they teach the skill. For math, Ch. 2 should be done and entered now and Ch. 3 should be done by the end of T1
2nd: No timeline for ELA, assess when they teach the skill, all 4 should be entered by the end of T1. For math, Chs. 1 and 2 should be in and Ch. 3 should be in by the end of T1.
3rd: ELA should be given in November prior to the end of T1. Team will be re-convened to redo T2 and T3 assessments. For math, not tracking data for Ch. 1. Ch. 3 should be done now, and Chs. 4 and 5 should be entered by the end of T1.
4th/5th ELA and Math: ELA is to be administered at the end of T1. For math, Erin will enter the data.
5th Science: Not collecting data for T1. Team will be re-convened to redo T2 and T3 assessments.
Encore: Enter data by the end of T1. Share with PE and Music
2. Send one piece of amazing student work to the office; to hang on our bulletin board in the hallway.
3. Send Tina an Email; What barrier have you taken away to make your teaching more effective? (Check out the link below)
4. Check out the Coaches Playbook; We've added a status line to help keep track of progress.
5. We are eliminating our tradebooks in the library...please take some time to tag those that you'd like us to keep. We need to know by October 26th! Put a post-it with your grade level on it directly on the books in the book room. We will find a place to keep them (but, we need the shelf space now for our new Guided Reading materials that have arrived). If you do not tag the ones you want to keep by the deadline, they may be packed up to go...

UDL: Things to think about...
Take a look...and share with me this week something that you have changed , related to your Instructional Materials, to take away the potential barrier in your own classroom.
Instructional Methods --- Potential Barriers --- Solutions to the Barriers
(This was the colored flyer I put in your mailboxes last week)
Send me an Email!
I will keep sharing each week in our TEAM Memo!
Check out the UDL Changes that have been made in our building this week!
Our TEAM is really working to find Solutions to Barriers in our classroom. Check it out and maybe take their idea and implement it in your own classroom too!
"I have started to use and display the online version of our science/social studies magazines when I go over them with students. (Scholastic Weekly and Studies Weekly) The online format is not only larger print, but it also has a read-aloud function. This function engages students by highlighting each word as it reads.
I think this helps take away the barrier of the text being too small. It also helps keep students engaged as they can easily follow along and keep pace with the text."
Suzi ( Special Education- Gr. 1 and 3)
"A lot of my kids really don't enjoy the physical act of writing but can be very creative. To allow this and reduce embarrassment and frustration, they have the option to voice type their thoughts using Google Docs."
Terri (Art K-5)
"The following are successful strategies that I use for optimum learning overcoming barriers in the art classroom:
1. Continue to provide relevance with art lessons to the elementary students everyday lives, as well as relate to their current and changing interests.
2. Debrief and Assess CONSTANTLY!....even as students are learning an art lesson do not wait until they have completed the lesson, assess constantly.
3. Let the students reflect on what they have completed using ONLY positive descriptions, even when they need to improve on a skill. Reflection is also necessary BOTH individually as well as with the whole a group of student artists.
4. Allow students more than one chance during an art lesson to learn...aka:Yes, I do allow the art students to start over on projects if they wish... exception would be for any assessments.
Dawn (Grade 5)
Potential Barrier/Solutions
1. Vocabulary
- Instructional Material - Wordly Wise
- Barrier - difficult vocabulary
- Solution - preteach, internet resources, cards, daily routines, and interactive resources
2. Comprehension
- Instructional material - Storyworks magazine
- Barrier - text presents comprehension challenges
- Solution - audio version, collaborative rdg.
Courtney (Grade 2)
Potential Barrier: Unknown words in text (especially for my very emergent readers)
Solution: Illustrations drawn on sticky notes, along with the word, during guided reading/small group instruction to reference when the word is repeated on several pages
Potential Barrier: AR quizzes often include difficult vocabulary (especially for my very emergent readers)
Solution: Quiz questions and answer choices read aloud to the student as they complete the quiz
Potential Barrier: Unclear guidelines for following along when a Scholastic News reading comprehension quiz is read aloud (blank bubbles to color in), mainly for my emergent readers as I encourage those who are independent readers to complete the quiz at their own pace (so they do not necessarily have to listen to each question and possible answer choices read aloud).
Solution: I wrote letters within the blank bubbles prior to copying multiple pages for more independence in following along in order for students to select their response more readily
