Math Updates
In Math this week, we reviewed a few concepts from the end of second grade. We started by using number lines to round numbers to the nearest ten or hundred. We then reviewed telling time to the nearest minute. Finally, we worked on problem solving involving elapsed time, or time that has passed. We used number lines to jump in increments of 60, 30, 10, 5 and even 1 minute increments. Then we added the hours and minutes to see the total time passed.
Building a READING LIFE
In Reading this week, we discussed ways we could make reading the best it can be. We discussed how finding a good spot at home to read is essential. The students were asked to discuss this with you before doing their nightly reading on Tuesday. We then talked about how talking about books to others is a way to find more books that we may be interested in reading. Also, attitude is everything! If we read like books are gold, we will enjoy reading. However if we read like cranky curmudgeons, we aren't even giving our books a chance. Finally, we reviewed the five finger rule and discussed how we need to make sure we are reading just right books so that we can be super successful in setting up our reading life at the start of 3rd grade!
Word Study
Word Study will start soon! Below is a sneak peek at the word study homework schedule!
Monday nights- Students are to sort their words and record them in their notebooks. They are to also record their discovery or rule for the week.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights- Students should sort their words and read them as they sort. They can practice writing them on paper, whiteboards, or typing them. NO WRITTEN homework is required on these nights.
Thursday nights- Students are to ask an adult to quiz them on their words. They write the headers and then record the words as they are called out. The adult should use the notebook to correct the sort and ask the student to practice any words that were spelled incorrectly. This can be done on the back of the homework sheet. This paper should then be returned to school Friday morning.
Friday- there will be a test given
Writing long & strong
This week in Writing, we started off the new year by setting goals for ourselves. We talked about what writer's notebooks look like and don't look like. We then started to gather strategies to help us think of ideas when we are having trouble doing so. We discussed making lists of people important to us, choosing one, listing small moments about that person, picking our favorite, and then writing long and strong. We then talked about creating a map of our favorite place and then writing ideas on the map of stories that happened there one time. They then chose an idea and wrote long and strong.

Technology
This week we posted our math work and pictures to SeeSaw. We accessed Storia- a great resource for reading at home and at school. Login information is glued to the front page of your child's planner. We also started to do Xtra Math and Rocket Math on the iPad. Finally, we logged into Google Classroom to get us started with using digital word sorts.
If you have not signed into Seesaw, please see the paper I sent home or the email regarding how to do so. :)
Cartesian divers
This week the children enjoyed a wonderful time of discovery! They made SUBMARINES!!! OK, so they were droppers cut to look like subs...but they DOVE! The students were able to manually move these Divers up and down a soda bottle. They explored buoyancy and how it works for and against objects in water. The kids had a blast.
