IMS & WES STEM Teachers Present Pollution Solution Machines at FAST!
Lisa Knapp, STEM Lab Teacher of Indiantown Middle School, Kathleen Moeller, and Crystal Hallee, Learning Lab Teacher, both from Warfield Elementary School presented Pollution Solution Machines at the 2016 Florida Association of Science Teachers (FAST) Convention in Orlando, Florida.
Attendees were provided with the opportunity to learn about water pollution and water runoff. Then, acting as students themselves, attendees were posed an Engineering Design Challenge to “Design and create a machine to help clean our waterways.” Resources and materials were provided to complete the project.
Your children have been working hard at school and there are many ways you can support at home as well. One of the best things you can do is to read with your child. Just like any sport we play, the more we practice, the more success we experience.
Along with reading nightly is the opportunity to use the iReady reading and math instructional programs at home. The website is: https://cainc.i-ready.com/ and you can contact your child’s teacher if you are unsure of your child’s log in information.
Here are some additional resources that may guide you as you help your child at home:
- Just Take 20 (JT20) is a Florida initiative to improve student achievement in reading and literacy by recognizing that literacy begins at home. http://www.fldoe.org/academics/standards/just-read-fl/just-take-20/families/

Parent Guide for English Learners
For families of English learners there is a lot to know, including how their children are:
- Identified as English learners
- Taught English and other subjects
- Tested, tested, and tested some more
- Designated as proficient in academic English and moved out of English learner services
"The Parent Guide for English Learners" gives you basic information about each of these topics. It will help you talk with your child’s school, ask the right questions, and support your child on their journey as an English learner. English and Spanish versions are available.
