MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
What a great first week back to full day in-person learning we’ve had! I am so proud of the staff and students for how they adapted to all of the new procedures and routines we’ve put in place in order to keep each other safe, and it has been heartwarming to see students in the lunchroom, on the playground, and in their special area classes once again. This was a positive step closer to what we’ve grown accustomed to over the years and it was evident in conversations with both students and staff that this first week back in school really boosted everyone’s spirits. For our remote learners, while the instructional model didn’t change, this week did mark another transition for staff and students with many students being assigned to a new teacher, all students having new classmates, and the schedule changing once again. I am proud of our remote staff and students for how they adapted to these changes, worked on establishing a classroom community, and continued along with their learning in seamless fashion.
With full in-person learning in place for many students, now might be a good time for parents to start serving as a substitute teacher! It is a perfect opportunity for parents who have the time and are looking for some additional money to be able to serve the school and work flexibly on days that fit your schedule. We currently have two subs who help regularly at Fairview and about 5 who help occasionally, which is by far the lowest we’ve had in the nine years I’ve been here. Please consider helping as a sub. See the flyer in the newsletter for more details and contact me if you have any follow up questions.
Another area where we could use parent support is in our car line pick up before and after school. Because this is our most popular drop off and pick up zone, we need your help with a few procedures to keep things operating efficiently. Following the tips below will ensure we have an efficient, effective and safe experience using the north drop off zone.
Please remain in a single file line along the curb. While there is room for two cars, it is unsafe for students to exit or enter their car from the interior lane. Driving around a stopped car in front of you could very easily result in a car accident as well. Thank you for remaining in a single file line.
Please remain in your vehicle the whole time. When you pull up to the supervisor, your child should exit the car and walk to their door on their own. If you’d like to walk your student up to the door, please park and walk rather than use the drop off zone. Parents who do walk their children up to the door should remember to wear a mask to keep everyone safe and to set a good example for the students.
Pull up through the drop off zone as far as you can up to the sign posted adjacent to the playground to make room for more cars behind you. When cars stop before the end of the zone, it creates more congestion in the line and reduces the efficiency of the car line drop off process.
Students should stay in the loading zone by our supervisors until parents pull forward. Please refrain from waving your child over to your car from five cars deep. This creates confusion about our procedures for the students and goes against what we’ve instructed them to do while they wait.
Thank you for your help! As we look forward to next week, all students will be participating in the spring MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) assessments on Tuesday and Wednesday. These assessments help us to measure growth over time for our students and provide teachers with valuable information about relative areas of strength and weakness for our students. These assessments will be given to both in-person and remote students. Please encourage your child to do their best while taking the assessment so that we can get an accurate measure of their current performance. That said, also share that all we ask is that kids try their best. We don’t want the assessment to become a source of stress for any of our students. Thank you for your continued partnership as we work together to help your child learn and grow. Have a nice weekend!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus
Fairview Principal
PARENTS OF IN-PERSON STUDENTS
ALL IN-PERSON STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO SUBMIT A HEALTH SELF-CERTIFICATION EVERY DAY
Click on the graphic for information on how to complete the daily Covid-19 health screening for your student(s).
If your student is a remote student there is no need for you to complete this daily self-certification. To stop receiving the daily email for your remote student(s) click on "Click here to unsubscribe" in the body of the email.
MORNING ARRIVAL
Please remember that students should not arrive at school earlier than 8:35 a.m. as we do not have supervision prior to that time. The only exceptions are if they are in a before school program/club.

COMMUNICATION
Communication is very important to ensure the safety of all students at Fairview. Your child’s teacher and the school office must be aware of where your child is at all times during the school day.
If your child is a bus rider and will not be riding the bus home on a certain day, we ask that you always send a note with your student. This note should include your child’s name, date, and bus route number. Please state that your child will not ride the bus on that day, and add any other pertinent information regarding how your child will be going home on that day. For your convenience click here for a form that you can print out and use. If a bus student does not have a note, they will ride the bus home...no exceptions. Only students who are signed up for the bus may ride the bus to and from school. If your child (non bus rider) has a play date with a bus rider, other arrangements will have to be made for their transportation at the end of the school day.
If your child will be absent from school, please call the attendance line at 847-394-7320 before 8:50 a.m. the day of the absence. Our attendance line is available 24 hours a day/7 days a week for your convenience. During Fairview office hours, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, you may also contact the office at 847-394-7320.
Please notify the office if your child will be arriving to school late because of a morning doctor’s appointment, car trouble, etc. It is very important that we know where students are if they are not at school on school days.
Please remember to include Mrs. Trezise (ctrezise@d57.org) and Mrs. Young (cyoung@d57.org) when sending an email regarding your child's arrival, dismissal, or absence from school. If your child's teacher is absent the substitute teacher does not have access to the teacher's email so the message will not get read.
LUNCH REMINDERS
PLEASE put your child’s name in permanent marker on his/her lunchbox.
PLEASE send spoons or forks if your student will need one for something in their lunch (i.e., pudding, fruit cup, etc.).
PLEASE make note of the lunch/recess schedule:
2nd/3rd grade-11:50 lunch/12:20 recess
4th/5th grade-11:50 recess/12:20 lunch
Also, please remember to put your child's name on his/her water bottle so it can be returned if it gets misplaced.
