County Government Making Us Proud!
Outstanding EMS Agency
I am thrilled to announce that Frederick County has been named the Outstanding Emergency Medical Services Agency in the State by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems!
To be named the outstanding EMS system in the state is a huge honor. Our citizens can rest assured that they are receiving the best possible care when they call for help.
Frederick County won the honor due to a long list of achievements over the past year, including:
- Our EMS-paramedic training program earned national accreditation.
- EMS first responders partnered with local law enforcement agencies for specialized active assailant training and deployment.
- We launched a mobile integrated health program that makes home visits to help citizens better manage health care needs, so they don’t need to visit the hospital’s Emergency Department as often.
I am incredibly proud of the work our emergency providers do every day helping save lives and responding to critical incidents. The work of our career and volunteer responders is absolutely top-notch.
Creating Housing Options
To make it easier to construct ADUs, I worked with County Council President Bud Otis and Council Member Jessica Fitzwater to draft legislation to streamline the process.
Because small ADUs are likely to have only one bedroom, school impact fees would be waived for units 800 square feet or smaller. Other regulations would differ based on factors such as whether the project has water and sewer or is on well and septic.
I am pleased to advance legislation to provide more housing options to make life better for people.
A copy of the proposed legislation is available here.
Accountability in Opioid Crisis
We need to hold pharmaceutical companies accountable for their role in the national opioid crisis. That's why Frederick County Government joined other state and municipal jurisdictions in filing lawsuits against drug manufacturers and distributors for their role in the opioid crisis nationwide.
Frederick County has already devoted a tremendous amount of time and money to the opioid crisis. Through this lawsuit we will be better able to help our residents with educational and addiction recovery assistance.
Officials from Frederick County and The City of Frederick, which also filed suit, want to be part of the solution to halt the illegal distribution of drugs and help residents achieve recovery from the opioid epidemic.
The lawsuits seek restitution for harm incurred as a result of deceptive and fraudulent marketing practices of several manufacturers, and the failure to report suspicious purchases by certain wholesalers, which are violations of state and federal laws.
As of May 31, there have been 154 opioid-related overdoses in Frederick County this year, including 25 fatal overdoses.
