April 2024
From the Principal
As we begin 4th quarter we still have so much to do. We are truly experiencing April showers here in the desert, driving around Tucson there are so many flowers blooming. Spring is definitely in the air!! This month students are asked to not only focus on day-to-day instruction, but to also do their best on all state assessments. This time of year can be stressful for students; our PBIS Committee and Student Council continue to provide encouragement and celebrations for their best efforts. Mr. Carlos has also been engaging the musical talent of our students and will be hosting a spring concert (more details to come).
Let’s Go Mustangs – We R.A.C.E. to WIN!!!!
Mustang's Spotlight: Mr. Samuel West , High School Teacher
My name is Mr. Sam West. I have worked at Mary Meredith K-12 for just over 12 years. I have been teaching here for the last 10 years. I grew up in Kingman, Arizona and moved to Tucson to attend the University of Arizona, where I majored in English Literature. I worked briefly in social services but knew that my heart lay in education as both of my parents were teachers.
I grew up skateboarding and I have identified with high needs students as they see the world differently. I enjoy the challenge of forming positive relationships with my students and helping them to prepare to be productive members of society. I recently replaced skateboarding with rock climbing as it provides a similar challenge and helps me to unwind from the daily rigors of life. I also enjoy cooking, reading, and various other sports and outdoor activities—rest is rust!

April is National Autism Awareness Month
For almost 50 years now, schools have taken the month of April to join families affected by autism in celebrating and promoting autism awareness. First held in 1972, National Autism Awareness Month facilitates greater public acceptance, celebrates the differences, and helps foster a more inclusive environment for the roughly 5,437,988 adults with autism and 1 in 44 children in the United States with the condition.
What your child should know about autism:
· Autism is a difference that’s hard to see. It is a difference in the way someone thinks. This difference in thinking can make it hard for someone with autism to talk with people, make friends and handle emotions—especially in the busy parts of the classroom and school.
· Even though there are differences, it doesn’t mean that your classmate with autism wants to be alone. There are many ways to be a good friend to your classmate with autism.
How can I be a friend to someone with autism?
· Accept your friend’s differences.
· Know that some kids with autism are really smart, but may demonstrate it in a different way.
· Be patient – understand that your friend doesn’t mean to bother your or others.
· Support your friend if he or she asks for help.
· Join your friend in activities that interest him or her. For more information, please read the April is Autism Awareness Month article.
