PARC Pride
Prairie Area Reading Council is proud to share that we made a donation to provide many books to students over the summer to prevent the summer reading slide. These books were distributed to Mannheim District 83 students via the Book Mobile. This program was provided in affiliation with Title I and the Read and Feed Program.
Book Review by Kelly Neylon
Superbetter by Jane McGonigal
How does one overcome obstacles in life? According to Jane McGonigal, you play Superbetter!
The book Superbetter isn’t a "teaching" book. It isn’t about educational pedagogy or reading strategies. It’s about how Jane McGonigal, a game designer, used her gaming skills to develop a way to overcome her debilitating concussion.
I know what you are thinking. How might one use this as an educator? In many ways, it turns out. The Superbetter game allows one to use the skills developed when gaming to overcome difficulties in life. Gaming develops skills. In this book, Jane McGonigal gives readers quests to see just how this works.
As educators, we can use lessons from this book in our classrooms. Kids love games, and we can help them learn from those games in classroom as well as in life. This book is fantastic! You can check out Jane McGonigal’s Ted talk: https://youtu.be/lfBpsV1Hwqs
Donations for Operation Care Package
Operation Care Package is a registered, 501 © 3 organization whose mission is to “Let no hero be forgotten.” Thousands of care packages are sent to US troops all over the world, ensuring that all heroes receive a care package. Members of Prairie Area Reading Council support OCP by donating new (or gently used) paperback books and comics. The troops appreciate, enjoy, and read and reread all books and comics received. Help us support our troops! Donations will be accepted at every PARC event.
