March Newsletter
Letter from the Head of School
by Kara Lawler
Dear Grier families and friends,
Top o’ the morning to you!
I grew up in a predominately Irish family (23& Me has proved that!), and in case there’s ever a trivia contest about me, I’ll tell you an interesting fact: both of my parents are redheads. While my family, like many American families, lost most of the traditions associated with Ireland, we always celebrated St. Patrick’s Day. Of course, the holiday--the way we always celebrated it anyways--is classically American! But the sentiments of the holiday are ones I’ve always cherished: the counting of our blessings and the love of family and friends.
March often makes me think of luck--the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. At the end of the rainbow here at Grier, I see friendships blossoming and blessings abounding! Daily, your daughters impress me, make me smile, and help me remember how lucky I am to be in their lives! The skies have been so blue here and by the end of this month, our grass will be green again. Just this morning, I had my office window open, and I can hear the sparrows reminding me that spring is on its way with their song.
All of this reminds of an Irish Blessing I love. I share it here with you:
May green be the grass you walk on,
May blue be the skies above you,
That pure be the joys that surround you,
May true be the hearts that love you.
May your March be filled with pots of gold and rainbows aplenty!
Sending the luck of the Irish,
Kara

Teacher Talk
By Mr. Lang
As everyone looks forward to spring break, the faculty at Grier continue to try to keep things interesting as the delve deeper into content and new ideas. We have been lucky to have some great visitors on campus for the whole school, including all-school events with a group for Martin Luther King Jr. Day and a visiting author.
But, alongside the large group events the school has offered students, individual teachers have been bringing in specialists in their fields to engage with the students and give them another perspective and share their professional experiences. In English, Dr. Findley and the 7th grade English classes welcomed, as the culmination of a long-term poetry project, Lee Peterson, an award-winning poet who teaches at Penn State. Ms. Peterson had opened her personal library to the students, and they were privileged to have the chance to explore a curated selection of “the poems that a poet themselves enjoys reading” over the previous weeks. Students had the chance to have a wide-ranging discussion of poetry, art, and the poet’s life with Ms. Peterson.
Photography teacher, Mrs. Fernandes, brought in Lori Hepner, a Pittsburgh-based photographer, who works with long exposures to compose multidimensional works of art with subjects that are moving as they "draw" with various light sources. Mrs. Fernandes noted that it gets the students invested in the subject matter when they get to interact with real people who make a living as writers and artists, opening students' eyes to even more possibilities.
In the dance department, Mrs. Hrzic invited Marc Spaulding, from the faculty at Point Park University, who spent a few days teaching The Lester Horton technique. As a former member of Philadanco Dance Company and other things such as Dreamgirls, West Side Story, Hairspray, Euphoria, Saturday Night Live, and Dancing With The Stars, the girls got the opportunity to learn from someone who has taken their work and skills into the professional world. Likewise, the next choreographer working with the dance company was in the Ariana Grande's latest music video. The chance to work with outstanding professionals and gain rare experiences is truly a magical part of being a Grier student and we all appreciate the hard work and the efforts of the faculty to bring as many of these great opportunities to our students.

Crago's Corner
by Cari Crago, Dean of Counseling, Wellness & Residential Life
Everyone is looking forward to our Spring Break that is just two weeks away. This morning, I even had three of our eighth graders pop in with the countdown by hours and minutes;-).
I always refer to our return from Spring Break as my sliding board where April begins and then it is all of sudden graduation and the end of the school year. We have so many fun activities, shows, events and our official senior/graduation countdown in April and May. My hope always is that these wonderful happenings help slow down the ride of the sliding board so that our students can enjoy and relish in the amazing-ness of it all!
Following along with some dorm updates, another one of our door decorating contests is under way. With the hope of inspiring an early Spring (along with Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction) our theme for our March contest is Campus Garden Party. Creativity will be a key factor in this competition and the judges love originality and ingenuity. Some of the ideas I have heard already in the works are phenomenal!
Our Day Students are of course joining in the fun decorating their lockers and we are so excited to witness Wrens and Cardinals venture into Spring.
Again, along with our exhilarating dorm activities and dorm wars is the awarding of our coveted trophies to the dorm/hall that prevailed in our games, lost the least deportment points, showed consistent kindness, joined in community service events, and averaged the highest over-all final deportment score. These coveted trophies are awarded at the end of each marking period.
We are proud to announce that following a nail-bitingly close race, this Marking Period’s winners are:
· 7-9th grade – 2nd Floor
· 10-12th grades – Rexroad Student Center
Congratulations!!
More exciting dorm news: We will be holding our sign-up festivities for all of our returning underclass(wo)men directly following our return from Spring Break. I love the way we celebrate the event and I know our 7-11th graders are super excited as many are so looking forward to it.
As I mentioned, we have already begun our countdown to Graduation along with graduation meetings, rehearsals and especially practicing Grier’s beautiful Alma Mater which I included below for you all to enjoy as well.
Grier School Alma Mater
The happy hours of work and play,
The golden autumn haze,
With team cheers echoing down the field,
With joys of Grier School days.
What Green and Gold have taught us well
In field of mimic strife,
To love the game beyond the prize,
To give our best to life.
(Chorus)
Now to our loved school we raise
Our eternal song of praise.
Let the anthem ring, while our hearts sing
To thee, Grier School, all hail!
The mighty hills on every side
Surround and shelter thee.
The pine trees laden down with snow
In winter's majesty.
The colonnade, the winding drive
The glowing stars at night,
All frame thy beauty in our hearts
With memories delight.
(Chorus)
Now to our loved school we raise
Our eternal song of praise.
Let the anthem ring, while our hearts sing
To thee, Grier School, all hail!
When spring returns with robin's song
And blossoms’ fragrant breeze,
We leave behind your ivy walls
The flowering Lawns and trees
With memory’s flame to light our path
Oh, alma mater dear,
We open wide the future's gate.
Hail and farewell, loved Grier!
(Chorus)
Now to our loved school we raise
Our eternal song of praise.
Let the anthem ring, while our hearts sing
To thee, Grier School, all hail!

The Foxes Den
Let's GO Foxes!
How quickly the winter has gone by, as our Varsity Sport season is coming to an end our teams are reflecting back on the memories and friendships that were made. As the Athletic Director, I am so proud of all the teams. The love and fiery spirit they have for their sport shines through in every game. Congratulation to all! Go Foxes! -Cherie Gates
It has been my pleasure to chaperone our Grier skiers this year on many of their trips to the Tussey Mountain Ski Area. As the season wraps up, I am reflecting on our time spent on the snow. Skiing, like many other sports, offers many benefits in addition to building strong bodies and healthy lifestyles. This year we had many never-ever skiers who have gone from not knowing how to get their boots on to carving a path down the mountain. They have learned to be willing to fall and to always get back up. They have practiced patience and persistence. They have gained confidence and independence. They have strengthened friendships and had snow much fun! I hope they will continue to ride to the top of bigger mountains and experience the thrill of carving their own path as they navigate the challenges of life remembering what they have learned: take a lesson if you need it, always get back up, look out for your friends, and enjoy the ride. -Gina Dunklebarger
The 2023-2024 Varsity basketball season for the Grier Foxes was one to remember.
The term "improvement" is tossed around a lot in sports, but for those who spent time around the basketball program this season, they know that the Foxes truly embraced the challenge of improving and working hard every single day. This consistent approach paid off not only in improved individual skills and abilities, but more importantly in teamwork and the concept of five players moving as one collectively for a common goal.
The team's development throughout the season came to a culmination on Senior Night when the Foxes took on Mercersburg Academy. Playing their best basketball of the year, the team set a season-high for most points in a game, while also limiting the Blue Storm to their lowest point total of the season. Grier, in a thriller, pulled out an unforgettable 1-point victory!
The win took place in The Den, which is what the team decided to name the gym early in the season. Every home game that took place in The Den was filled with energy and excited which helped boost the team. On Senior Night, however, the atmosphere was truly electric. Students and staff packed the bleachers and stood on the baselines cheering the team on to victory and creating an environment unlike any seen before in program history. As the final buzzer sounded, the crowd rushed the court to join the team in a massive celebration.
This season, a mix of veteran leadership and keen youth made for an exciting team dynamic from top to bottom. Bonds of friendship were made through many hours of practice, games, bus rides, and team dinners, and will be remembered long after this year comes to an end.
Thank you very much for your support of Grier School and Grier School athletics. Go Foxes!
