Superintendent's Update - 3.8.2024
Dear CPS Community,
This weekend, our clocks will officially spring forward at 2:00 a.m. Sunday March 10th when we move forward one hour, part of the twice annual time change that affects millions. The purpose of daily light savings is to accommodate more daylight in the evenings in March and accommodate more daylight in the mornings in November. Remember to move/set your clocks ahead an hour before you go to sleep Saturday night.
The topic of time continues as we “march” toward the last quarter of the school year, with Term 3 ending by the end of the month for the high school and middle schools and Trimester 2 at the elementary schools. Please mark your calendars for the following marking period dates – Elementary Schools – March 20th; CHS March 28th; McCarthy and Parker Middle Schools April 2nd. With approximately three weeks left, now is a great time to check-in with your child(ren) about work completion, study habits, and what their grades look like in Aspen to identify any gaps and needs before the term closes. Please encourage your child(ren) to speak with their teachers about questions they have, or help needed to set them up for success and be prepared for the last marking period of the school year.
As a reminder to our CHS seniors, I would like to direct your attention towards an upcoming scholarship deadline. The Chelmsford Business Association college scholarship deadline is March 18th. This scholarship provides $5,000 dollars to selected senior to use towards college expenses. If you plan to apply, please email chelmsbusassoc@comcast.net for more information. Scholarships make a significant difference in your educational journey. I encourage students to take advantage of the opportunity to apply.
Tonight is the first performance of the Parker Middle School drama club’s production of “Annie KIDS” at 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. I look forward to attending the performance this evening. The students have been working very hard these past few weeks preparing for the big night. There are a few tickets still available for tonight’s and tomorrow’s performances. If you are looking for last minute tickets for the performances, please use the following link to make your purchase.
Please have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the extra sunlight this Sunday!
Yours truly,
Jay Lang, Ed.D.

Parker Middle School Presents....
Parker Middle School Drama presents “Annie KIDS”
Members of Parker Middle School’s drama program have been busy preparing for the curtain to go up on their production of “Annie KIDS,” with four performances over two days this weekend. The show is the first of its kind in Chelmsford, featuring an entire cast and crew of fifth and sixth graders. Previous Parker performances included seventh and eighth grade students before the middle school realignment prior to the 2023-24 school year. “It was a wonderful experiment to see what happens when you have just 10- and 11-year-olds,” said director Martha Robertson, Parker Middle School chorus and music teacher. “It’s been interesting and very high-energy.” Based on the popular comic strip and adapted from the Tony Award-winning Best Musical, “Annie KIDS” features everyone’s favorite little redhead as she seeks to find the parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of an orphanage in New York City. New South Row Student Newspaper
South Row fourth graders launch student newspaper
Fourth graders at South Row Elementary School have published their very first edition of the South Row Times, a new student newspaper. And they are already hard at work on the next one. Fourth grade teacher Beth-Ann Mathews is advising the students with the endeavor, explaining that it’s an experience that will better prepare them for middle and high school. “Years and years ago, my daughter came through South Row,” she said. “The principal at the time was really into writing and she created a newspaper. The kids would come before school and she would work with them in creating this newspaper. And I thought, what a cool thing to have young kids learn about.” With a relatively new fourth grade student council, Ms. Mathews said she thought those children would be the perfect ones to manage a newspaper. “One thing I’ve always wanted to do was to get kids involved in something like that,” she said. “The kids [in student council] are already invested in wanting to be a part of the school.” About a dozen students signed up to volunteer their time to the project, and began working on the first edition. Please visit our website to read more about the new South Row student newspaper.
