Meet GRASP Alumna Kacy Cummings!
What did you study in college? At Hampton University, I studied Public Relations and Marketing. Upon completion of my undergraduate degree I did a lot of research on graduate schools and decided that Strayer University would be the best fit for me because they offered both on-campus and online classes. I began Strayer University July 2016 where I studied Management and Marketing and completed my program March 2018.
What is the best thing GRASP has done for you? The GRASP program and scholarship helped me become more disciplined in high school. I was able to pick up organizational skills so that I could meet deadlines to submit paperwork in order to be a candidate for the scholarship. It also helped me purchase my books when I went off to college.
What are you doing now? As of right now I am working in the financial industry where I use my PR, Marketing, and Management skills to implement new strategies and tactics for growth. I also have my own wedding and event planning business that currently serves Richmond and its surrounding cities.
What one piece of "educational advice" would you give to high school students? One piece of education advice I would give to high school students is to start building relationships and networking early. Forming relationships with individuals who come to visit the school for career fairs, people you meet on field trips, and your teachers/school administration. You never know how someone can help you get to the next level in your future, so take full advantage of every opportunity placed in front of you.
What is the biggest life challenge you faced relative to your educational path? The biggest life challenge that I have faced relative to my educational path was having my mind set on doing one thing that became very unrealistic after graduating college. Whether or not you plan on attending college, going into the military, or going straight to work after high school make sure you have several plans laid out that could work for you in your current situation. Just remember there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.
