Discovering Joy
As my adventure continues advising students in the pursuit of national and international scholarships, I am discovering just how important experiences of joy are to our intellectual, social, and emotional health, especially in a pandemic.
Recently I heard Dr. Rebecca Rozelle-Stone talk about the importance of joy in learning new information and skills in her address to students at Honors Preview Day. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, one of my favorite psychologists, would certainly agree as he asserted that joy is at the core of all engaging and challenging activities. Bertrand Russell, a philosopher whom I referenced in the September issue, however, qualified that true joy comes from actions that serve others (not the self). Joy, therefore, signals the presence of learning and embracing challenge in the service of others.
I want to take a moment to reflect on what gives me joy in the work I do. Naturally, helping students dream big in the pursuit of national scholarships is very rewarding. What could be better than helping students envision a bolder and more creative version of themselves through a scholarship application? But equally impactful is supporting my NSPA students when they are serving their peers either through classroom presentations or individual conversations.
In this issue, I will begin sharing the videos my NSPA students have made about scholarship opportunities to various campus classrooms. May you find their work helpful in your decision to apply for national scholarships.
Discover joy in the work you do,

The PPIA Fellowship Program
Each year, Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Fellowship seeks out high-potential undergraduate students from universities across the country to participate in an intensive seven-week Junior Summer Institute (JSI) before their senior year. During their program, fellows are equipped with the knowledge and skills they will need to succeed in graduate school and ultimately, in influential roles serving the public good.
The goal of the PPIA Fellowship Program is to prepare students to pursue Masters' or joint degrees, typically in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field.

Melissa Bucholz, 2018 Boren Alternate, at the A&S 294 Honors Fall 2020 International Scholarship Panel discusses her experiences applying for the Boren
My name is Melissa Bucholz and I am a recent graduate in both International Studies and Criminal Justice with a minor in French. Whenever reflecting on my past experiences at the University of North Dakota, there is no doubt in my mind that the most dramatic, life-altering, and amazing experiences have been within my times(s) studying abroad. I studied abroad in Aix-en Provence, France in Spring 2017 and in Meknes, Morocco the 2108-2019 Academic year. I am taking this opportunity to talk about how the language learning process, focusing more on my time in Morocco, as I was learning more than one language....
Before I came to university, I did not know any other language besides English....
Wherever you go, language is a gateway into the culture. It is a way for you to connect with so many people, in different parts of the daily life. Although we are very lucky as English speakers, because English is language spoken very commonly throughout the world, knowing the language of the country that you are studying can be a major asset. Whether in classes, or self-taught learning any of the language within the host country is very worth it, and I hope you all get the chance to do so!
