YEAR 1858

India comes under direct rule of the British crown after failed Indian mutiny.The revolution began as a mutiny of sepoys of the East India Company's army on 10 May 1857, in the cantonment of the town of Meerut, and soon escalated into other mutinies and civilian rebellions largely in the upper Gangetic Plains and Central India.

YEAR 1920-1922

Nationalist figurehead Mahatma Gandhi launches anti-British civil disobedience campaign.

YEAR 1942-43

Congress launches the "Quit India" movement. This was a civil disobedience movement launched in India on August 8, 1942 by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

YEAR 1947-48

In 1947, there was the end of British rule and partition of sub-continent into mainly Hindu India and Muslim-majority state of pakistan.

In 1947-48, hundreds of thousands die in widespread communal bloodshed after partition.

In 1948, Mahatma Gandhi assassinated by Hindu extremist.


Third war with Pakistan over creation of Bangladesh, which was formerly East Pakistan.


India has successfully exploded their first atomic bomb under ground.


A large jump but the previous years in between were mostly more small skirmishes and democratic strains. In 2001 massive earthquakes hit the western state of Gujarat, leaving at least 30,000 dead.
