Feb. 20 - Feb. 24, 2023. Updates from the Academic Arts team

Dance

A Look Ahead: Classes are still growing their building blocks for dance with adding in more vocabulary. Kindergarten and First will explore locomotor movements. 2nd Grade will explore what tap is and how you can make sounds with your feet (tap shoes). 3rd Grade will look at the water cycle and how you can create it with movement as well as looking into who Alvin Alley was. 4th and 5th Grades will start to explore who Alvin Alley was and other important African American dancers were.


Highlights from Last Week: Students are off to a great start and really getting into the hang of moving and dancing. Kindergarten and First grade jumped right into the building blocks of dance with exploring personal space, general space, and why we warm-up at the start of each class. 2nd through 5th grades performed their review dances they created with a partner. Each pair performed in front of their classmates and did a great job.


Reminders: Please remember if your child has dance to wear clothing that are great for moving while still keeping in mind the NCCAE dress code. As well as shoes that can easily come on and off.

Drama

Welcome to Drama Class Second Quarter with Ms. Gordon at NCCAE!


Students have been playing get-to-know-you games with Ms. Gordon, learning all about each other and how they can work together as a class to be successful!


Reminders: We SOAR in the drama room: Safe, Organized, Always Respectful, Responsible.

General Music

A Look Ahead: Lines & Spaces and Fast & Slow



  • 4th Grade will be introduced to the musical staff, and participate in games, collaborative activities, and using instruments to master the notes in the treble clef
  • 2nd Grade & 1st Grade will discover what tempos are and be able to name slow and fast tempo markings
  • Kindergarten will learn the differences between fast and slow through listening assignments, movement activities, and games


Highlights from Last Week:


  • Students worked together to accomplish learning goals throughout all grade levels. Great job!


Reminders: Continue to encourage students to work towards classroom goals and rewards.

Visual Art


A Look Ahead: braiding, papier-mache, decorating masks


Highlights from Last Week: toast sculptures, analyzing peer artwork, weaving


Reminders: Students in any grade level who might consider applying to School of the Arts for middle school should be saving artwork as it comes home. Students will need to show samples of work they have completed.

Physical Education

A Look Ahead: Students in grades 3-5 students will be playing team games that use scooters to move during the game. K-2 will also be doing activities that use scooters to move around the classroom.


Highlights from Last Week: Students in PE finished played Casteball which is a fun active game which needs teamork, different offensive and defensive strategies while practicing the skill of throwing. grades K-2 finished up Balance Activity stations.


Reminders: Students should wear sneakers on the day they have PE class.
