Introduction to Dentistry by Dr. Michael Littell
Earlier in November, our students were fortunate to hear a presentation by Dr. Littell, DDS from Distinctive Dental Solutions. He spoke to the students about the field of dentistry, the training involved, and the many benefits to working in this field. Students will be able to shadow with Distinctive Dental Solutions beginning in December. They will get to choose from shadowing a DDS, a dental assistant or a dental hygienist.
Phlebotomy Workshop by Tony Evans, OTC MLT Instructor
No one likes getting their blood drawn, but our students enjoyed learning how to do this in a safe and effective manner. OTC Medical Laboratory Technology instructor, Tony Evans along with two of his students presented and trained our students on basic blood draws. Every student then took turns practicing on the mannequin arms set up by the instructor.
Introduction to the Nervous System and Dissection with Hannah H., MSU Instructor
MSU instructor, Hannah Hassain led the GO CAPS students through a sheep brain dissection. The students had been studying the nervous system structure and function and how it relates to healthcare. Hannah pointed out common medical conditions and how they related to the brain. As a follow up, the Stroke Team from Mercy came to the classroom. They explained the different types of strokes and where they occur in the brain. They also provided a hand-on activity where the students were on the Stroke team and had to break up a clot. The students first tried breaking up the clod by using TPA. If they were not successful with TPA they performed a procedure called a thrombectomy that uses a catheter to remove the blood clot. It was an exciting hand on activity!
Acute Care Professional Panel
As students begin their second rotation of shadowing, professionals from many of the acute areas of CoxHealth and Mercy spoke to the students about the type of patients they care for and what to expect when they begin shadowing in those areas. Represented at our panel was physical therapy, speech pathology, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, pediatric nursing, critical care nursing, medical / surgical / orthopedic nursing, and NICU nursing.
Resume and Interview Skills Workshops by CoxHealth & Mercy Recruiters
Just before Thanksgiving break, our students participated in a 2-day workshop on work place readiness skills. The focus on these two days was how to prepare a professional resume and cover letter and how an application differs from these documents. On the second day, students learned about how to prepare for job interviews and practiced some of the more common interview questions. To end our workshop, students engaged in a mock interview session with a recruiter.
