Growing Together
Geist Montessori Academy@GeistAcademy
Volume 9: September 27, 2020
Dear GMA School Family,
Peace Day was a beautiful celebration of community!
It is so incredible to witness our classrooms creating collaborative peace and real change in our world. Each classroom is committed to using their gifts and talents for the greater good, and outreach projects will be done throughout the year by all grade levels. I loved hearing the students’ ideas for peace; please see the photos featured, and enjoy their inspirational insight.
Along with this, just as the trees’ glide into a kaleidoscope of color before our very eyes, transformation of hearts and achievement is being witnessed in all of the classrooms. Thank you for working each and every day to bring out the richness of character and true colors of your child and one another. Each week, we can feel our sturdy strength as we grow together. I am so impressed by our community spirit, grit, and dedication to our GMA school family.
Speaking of strength, the Super Hero Run is coming WEDNESDAY, September 30th!
Please encourage your students to dress as their favorite super heroes, and see the attached PTO documents for further information. Remember, you are your child’s first and greatest Super Hero!
As we fly into another week, please know how grateful we are for you and ALL that you do!
Warmly,
Cindy Schuler

kaleidoscope of compassion
Peace Education is the seed that transforms into a kaleidoscope of hope of wonder. It reveals itself in many methods and manners in the Montessori classroom. Early on, children play the silence game and learn to quiet their bodies, helping them center and discover peace. Though the classroom is quiet, there is an interested buzz in the air, as curiosity and self-control align.
Children in a Montessori classroom have authentic learning opportunities and are free to move about the room and work on projects that pique their interest. The rich curriculum beginning early on, exposes students to history, science, and geography lessons, teaching them about their world in the past and present. As such, they develop a broader lens to see the world and a greater sense of pride in humankind, as they learn about its beginnings, accomplishments, and wondrous ways.
Connections that transcend time and place are unveiled and analyzed, radiating the gift of life. Students begin to see everything as one, the goal of Peace Education. They learn how to work as a community, help one another, and resolve conflict independently. Most importantly, though, students come to appreciate their own unique gifts and talents and are afforded opportunities to spread their light to others.
On Monday, September 2, all around the world, International Day of Peace was observed.
Geist Montessori Academy students gathered together and shared songs, ideas of peace, and made pinwheels of peace to disperse kindness and bliss to ALL!
This is what peace means to me:
Talya, " Friendship."
Callahan, " Saying I love you and meaning it."
Jude, "Loving the peple who are hurting the most."
Amaya, "Being nice."
Ellsie, " Showing respect and doing things for others."
Melanie, " Never cheating or doing wrong."
Cara, "Being kind to one another."
Let us learn from the children and spread the kaleidoscope of compassion.

It's time to fly in the fun! It's GMA's Super hero Run!
SUPERHERO RUN On Wednesday, Sept 30th,!
ALL students will participate in our annual Superhero Run! The children are encouraged to dress like a superhero of their choice, including medical professionals. This year we are not able to run/walk/dance as a group but we can still pledge to make healthy choices, for example, eating healthy food and exercising daily.
Please take pictures at home and send them to: geistmontessoriacademyPTO@gmail.com We want to encourage families to also send pictures of your child dressed up to the family and friends who gave donations in their names. Students are asked to raise money through donation requests to family members and friends.
Please assist your child in finding sponsors who may be willing to support Geist Montessori Academy. We are hoping for each student to raise at least $50. This will enable us to provide financial support to our school and teachers for:
● Community events provided free or at-cost
● Field Trip support
● In-school enrichment opportunities (guest speakers/artists/scientists)
● Classroom and specials support
● Special fund for outdoor play equipment
Any questions please reach out to Jessica Gray (VP Fundraising): shika21@att.net
Cheers,
PTO

Flu season is around the corner!
There are many ways we can help fight the flu this season. Some of the ways we are all working together to fight coronavirus will also be ways we can help combat the flu in our school community. In addition to wearing masks, frequent hand hygiene, and social distancing, getting a flu vaccine is strongly recommend this year as well as staying healthy and being diligent about other healthy habits.
Protect yourself, your family, and your GMA community this season with an annual flu vaccine for everyone in your family who is 6 months and older. While the timing of flu season is unpredictable, seasonal flu activity can begin as early as October and last as late as May. CDC recommends that people get vaccinated by the end of October, if possible. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body that protect against influenza virus infection.
Other healthy habits we can all participate in are things like, getting enough sleep at night, playing outside, riding bikes, not sharing food with friends, continuing to staying home when we do not feel well, and eating healthy. Ways you can add in extra nutrition for your family are by making sure you pack or prepare at least 1 fruit and 1 vegetable for lunch and drinking at least half your body weight in oz of water per day. For reference, a 60lb person would want to drink about 30 oz of water (the size of a quart of milk), and a 135lb person would want to drink about 68oz of water (the size of a 2 liter).
You have the power to protect your family and the GMA community against flu this season. Get yourself and your family a flu vaccine. The Indiana Immunization Vaccine Coalition is offering a free mobile vaccine clinic to GMA the week of October 5th. You can receive this year's flu vaccine, vaccines that are due now, or ones you need to catch up on for you or your students, and never leave your car. Fill out the pre registration form and look for more details next week! https://pdf.ac/t6Sek Fight the Flu!
