The Cardiovascular System
By: Alecia Pichette
Overall Characteristics
- 4 to 6 liters of blood
- The blood amount varies on age, sex, nutritional status
- 7% to 9% of total body weight
- Made up of Plasma(55%) and formed elements(45%)
Making blood and finding blood
- Blood is produced in the bone marrow
- This is primary made in flat bones, as in your skull
- Myeloid and Lymphatic tissues make blood cells for the body
Red blood cells
- Oxygen to body tissues in exchange for carbon dioxide
- red blood cells make up 45% of your blood
- transplant organs
- Looks like a 3D circle
-Hemoglobin- iron containing protein in red blood cells
-Oxyhemoglobin- homoglobin combined with oxygen
-Carbaminohemoglobin- the compound formed by the union of carbon dioxide with homoglobin
White blood cells
- white blood cells make up less than 1% of your blood
- protect body from bacteria
-Leukocytes- white blood cells
-Neutrophils- white blood cell that stains readily with neutral dyes
-Eosinophils- white blood cell that is readily stained by eosin
-basophils- white blood cell that stains readily with basic dyes
-Lymphocytes- type of white blood cell (B cell and T cell)
-Monocytes- a phagocyte
-Macrophage- phagocyte cells in the immune system
Platelets
- Make up less than 1% of your bodies blood
- forms clots (scabs)
- does not like lots of blood lose so when this happeneds they kick into action
- calcium and vitamin K is a big help to stop the blood
-Thrombocytes- another word for platelets, plays a role in blood clotting
-Prothrombin Activator- a protein formed by clotting factors from damaged tissus cells and platelets, converts prothrombin into thrombin, a step essentain to forming a blood clot
-Thrombin-protein important in blood clotting
-Fibrinogen- soluble blood protein that is converted to insoluble fibrin during clotting
-Fibrin- insoluble protein in clotting blood
-Coagulation-
-Thrombus- stationary blood clot
-Thrombosis- formation of a clot in a blood vessel
-Embolus- a blood clot or other substance that is moving in the blood and may block a blood vessel
-Embolism- obstruction of a blood vessel by foreign matter carried in the bloodstream
Plasma
- Makes up 55% of your bodies blood
- pain yellow liquid
- 90% water
- contains dissovled salts and minerals like calcium, sodium, magnesium, and potassium
-Plasma Protein- any of several proteins normally found in the plasma
-Serum- blood plasma minus its clotting factors, still contains antibodies
-Albumins- one of several types of proteins normally found in blood plasma, helps thicken the blood
-Globulins- a type of plasma protein that includes antibodies
-Fibrinogen- soluble blood protein that is converted to insoluble fibrin during clotting
-Prothrombin- a protein presents in normal blood that is required for blood clotting
