The Copeland PTO Newsletter
President's Corner by Karen Thomas
Well we are off and running!!
Our fall major fundraiser kicked off on Friday, September 14th! Please take a moment to look through the information your child brought home on Friday. It concludes on Tuesday, October 2nd for catalog orders and October 9th for online orders. Please return all orders (including payment) by Wednesday, October 3rd. We appreciate you supporting Copeland by placing an order or making a donation, which allows our children to benefit from all the wonderful programs we have planned for this school year. Thanks to our fundraising chairman, Donna Schulze, for organizing and coordinating our fundraiser.
Please plan to join us for a Volunteer Orientation Brunch onThursday, September 27th at 9:00 am in the school cafeteria.
We are still looking for a 5th grade Memory Book Chair. If you like collecting pictures and making memories last a lifetime then this is the position for you! Just contact Karen Thomas, at copelandptopresident@gmail.com.
There have been several forms coming home in the last couple of weeks (VIPS forms, PTO Membership forms, t-shirt forms, etc.). Thanks to everyone who has completed and returned them to the school. If you have not yet had an opportunity to fill yours out, please send those in as soon as possible. We want to ensure you and your child take advantage of all the PTO has to offer.
Thank you to our clinic chairman, Valerie Effinger, for organizing and setting up the vision/hearing’s screenings. Thanks to all the numerous volunteers who came out to help with the screenings. I know many volunteers have already put in countless hours at the school and at home assisting with tasks needed at the beginning of the year. The administration, staff, students and PTO thank you for these efforts. Keep up the great work!
Sign up now and be part of the team!
Sign-up for your 2018-2019 Copeland PTO Membership. It’s only $12 but this helps us all provide so much more for our Copeland Colts.

The Garden by Tracy Reynolds
This week for garden the 3 Rd graders fertilizer, the garden with blood meal and dry molasses. You should ask your students which smelled better?? The kids pulled weeds in the hot sun. Remember on garden days to wear the appropriate clothes. The 3 Rd graders started their fall planting. They planted arugula, raddishes and mustard greens. The garden will need to be watered more regularly , especially if we don't get rain. Please contact Tracy Reynolds at tracy.b.reynolds@gmail.com, if you are willing to water. Watering can be done anytime during school or after school. Our next garden day is October 4 th.

Volunteer of the month
Science Resource Center-Selina Sauceda
What is the SRC? The Science Resource Center (SRC) is a CFISD program that brings science curriculum into the classroom through the training of Parent Volunteers.
How can I help? Each grade level is presented with 2-4 SRC Demo opportunities each year. By attending a training for a demo offered in your child’s grade level (or any grade level that may interest you), you can then help present this curriculum (demo) to all students in that grade level.
When and where can I get trained? Trainings are available throughout the year. Click on the grade level links provided to find dates available for your child’s grade level. All training (except for Nature Trails) are done at the SRC facility, from 9:30-11:30 am.
SRC Training Center: 11206 Telge Rd. (Across from Arnold MS) 281-897-4004
What if I don’t like to handle animals? Many SRC Demos include live animals for the students to observe, but not all. Each demo is listed with whether they include live animals. At Demo training, the SRC staff will thoroughly train you in handling the animal involved in each demo. However, if you are not comfortable handling the animals, don’t let that discourage you from volunteering! Each Demo is designed to be taught by 2-3 volunteers who can split he duties of presenting the information and handling the live animals.
What if I have been trained in the past? Demo trainings are generally good for 3 years, unless the demo has changed. If you feel you need a “refresher”, feel free to sign up for a demo training. If you are comfortable teaching a demo based on your past training, email Selina.sauceda@gmail.com to be added to the trained volunteer list.
Sign Me UP! Simply click on the link below for the corresponding grade level and sign up for ONE of the available training times per Demo. After completion of training, email Selina.sauceda@gmail.com and she will add you to the trained volunteer list and provide you with demo dates at Copeland!

Volunteer Opportunities by Alya Hidayatallah
I am happy to announce that we have found a homeroom coordinator (HRC) for each classroom! Throughout the year, your HRC will keep you informed of class parties, school events, volunteer opportunities and much more. If you haven’t received any e-mails from your HRC, please ask the teacher for your HRC’s contact information and reach out to the HRC to ensure he/she has your e-mail address. The HRCs will rely on e-mail for all communications so it is really important to provide them with your e-mail.
We have had an overwhelming number of parents indicate that they would like to volunteer during the year and there will be lots of opportunities to do so. One great way to find out about opportunities is to attend the volunteer fair on Thursday, September 27 at 9:00am. It will take place in the Copeland cafeteria and light refreshments will be served.
For parents with students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade, we are always looking for volunteers to read to the students. Every week, we ask for a parent from each K-2 homeroom to come to Copeland and read a few books to the students in their homeroom. The kids get so excited for the parent readers and it is a lot of fun for the parents as well. Please contact your HRC for further information on how to sign-up.
Field day is approaching quickly. We will be seeking volunteers and we also love for parents to come out to support the kids. More information will follow in the coming weeks from your HRC.
October 17 – Field Day for Kindergarten and 3rdGrade
October 18 – Field Day for 2nd and 4th Grades
October 19 – Field Day for 1st and 5th Grades
Finally, please see the message below about our monthly Spirit Cart.
Spirit Cart
We are so happy to be back in school & are looking forward to another amazing year here at Copeland! We have Spirit Cart once a month on the 2nd Friday of the month (unless there is a student holiday). We just need a couple of hours of your time, to help our kiddos buy items from our cart. Super easy & fun! We enjoy watching their excitement when they see all of the cool stuff!
Thank you for volunteering your time, our students enjoy the opportunity to shop and they wouldn't be able to do it without volunteers like YOU! Please click on the link below to sign-up. If the sign up is full, but you still want to come, please do!! A lot of times people end up not being able to come, so we can always use an extra hand!
