Mariner Spotlight-Christina Doyle

My name is Christina Doyle and I am the curriculum coach for Perry Harrison (but you may know me best as “That one lady at car rider line”).

This is my 15th year in education. I started my career by earning a Bachelor’s degree at Salisbury University on the eastern shore of Maryland. I then moved on to teach 3rd grade for two years at the elementary school that I attended as a student. My then boyfriend moved from Ireland to North Carolina which in turn brought me here. 2nd grade was to be my placement for the next four years in Orange County. Then I moved to teach 2nd and then 5th grades at Perry Harrison.

At this time I graduated with my masters degree from UNC in elementary mathematics. I was awarded a Fellowship opportunity through the Kenan program where I had the opportunity to work alongside teachers from across the state. It was then that I became the curriculum coach at both Perry Harrison and North Chatham for 2 years before finally settling into my current full time coaching position here at Perry Harrison.

Six years ago I married my husband, Adrian. We love traveling and Disney! We’ve been to every Disney in the world (there are 6!), cruised with Disney, and completed several run Disney events. We’ve also been to see the Great Wall of China, the terra cotta warrior army, stayed in a ryokan, slept in a bubble hotel to see the northern lights in Iceland, observed the Mona Lisa, saw our first theater performance in London, and visited countless monuments and national parks all across the US during our two road trips across the country!

Now we are a bit more settled with our 2 Westies (Uisce is 13 & Echo is 9), Rory our 20 month old son, and looking forward to our next great adventure arriving February 2022!

And of all the amazing journeys I’ve been lucky enough to experience PHS will always be home!

October's Early Release Day

For last month's early release day, our teachers participated in a variety of professional development sessions. Our classroom teachers learned about Renzulli, a new interactive online system that provides students with a personalized learning environment, allowing them to easily differentiate instruction to increase engagement and achieve higher academic performance.

Our entire staff then participated in an equity session led by our school's equity team. Through this session we shared a common definition of equity and identified opportunities and barriers for our students at PHS.

Finally Mr. Smith led our staff through a required safety training that focused on lockdown procedures.

Career Chats-Leann Munoz

Our 4th and 5th graders had the opportunity to meet John Meyer, a meteorologist for the United States Antarctic Program. Mr. Meyer met the classes through zoom and shared his experiences traveling to Antarctica and the work that he does predicting the weather in this part of the world. Students saw pictures of the small town where he is based, the different types of animals he has encountered and some of the other professionals that work in his department.

This was the first session in Ms. Munoz's Career Chats that she has planned through her guidance program here at PHS. Each month she will be inviting guest speakers, both from our county and from across North Carolina and beyond, to meet with our 4th and 5th graders to share their professions and experiences. In March, students will begin to compare and contrast their career interests using different tools in their guidance class.

We encourage you to consider presenting your career with our students as it would be a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about jobs that are in our very own community. This also allows our students to have valuable background knowledge before they research about their own career interests. Please reach out to Ms. Munoz at if you are interested in presenting either live or over a zoom.

Writers' Celebrations

This past quarter I had the opportunity to be a guest in two classrooms where the students were celebrating their writing. These were such inspiring events that showed our students how writing can come to life and be so powerful. Ms. Griffin's 2nd graders wrote personal narratives with a spooky theme. Ms. Lloyd's 4th graders also shared personal narratives that focused on small moments, sparkle words and dialogue. Below are just a few pictures from the two events.

Unity Day

In celebration of Unity Day, October 20th, Ms. Munoz and Ms. Bowling combined their efforts with Eat a Rainbow to create a Unity Rainbow. With help from two parent volunteers, classes created colorful handprints to represent the colors of the rainbow. The final product showed how, when we come together, we can create beautiful works of art!

Fall Fest

What an amazing event! It was so wonderful to see so many of our families who came out to enjoy the fall festivities. A special "thank you" to Julie Ricker who organized the tree ceremony for Mr. Ronnie and Joy Krawczel, who led the Fall Festival committee. While the purpose of the Fall Festival was to bring our community together to celebrate all things "Fall", the PTA was able to raise $1082.00 that will go directly back into our school for our students and teachers. Way to go Mariners!
