Born on May 13, 1914, in a sharecropper's shack in Lexington, Alabama, Louis moved to Detroit as a small boy. Taking up boxing as an amateur, he won 50 out of 59 bouts (43 by knockout), before turning professional in 1934. He quickly gained a reputation in the Midwest.
