From Your Captain

A trend that we see across the campus during walk throughs is lower level questions and lack of student-to-student discussion. Please work to purposely plan these and then execute them during the actual lesson.

The Waco ISD Super 7 Skills to focus on are: high expectations, posted objective, active word walls, weekly planning, daily writing, academic vocabulary, and advanced questioning. These should be part of your weekly routine for lesson planning with your team.

Conscious Discipline

Our Weekly Commitment: We will be safe at dismissal by walking safely and directly to our dismissal location.

Classroom Tip: Morning Meeting is a great way to discuss the weekly school commitment. You can ask a different question each day like:

-What are the expectations for dismissal?

-How can you help keep yourself and others safe at dismissal?

-Why is it important for you to go straight to your dismissal location?

-Do you have some ideas on how we can help make dismissal safer?

PLCs on Friday, October 27

Judy York from Region 12 ALISEN will be here on Friday to help us with planning and questioning. EVERY teacher should be bringing his/her lesson plans for the next week. You will be working with Ms. York to increase the rigor of your pre-planned questions and finding opportunities for adding more student discourse.

Don't forget to bring your blue PLC Binder with your questioning strategies from Mrs. York.

November Makerspace

The November Makerspace activities will focus on Earth Science objectives. Grades PK-2 will read Roxaboxen and create a new tool using rocks, straw, popsicle sticks, and tape. Grades 3-5 Will read Iggy Peck, Architect. Students will test their building skills as they try to create an earthquake-proof house. Email Mrs. Helton to reserve a time!

Accommodations

Accommodations are an important part of success for many of our students. These accommodations can be documented through 504, Special Education ARD, LPAC (ELL students), or SAT. In order for a student to use an accommodation, you must be able to provide evidence that the accommodation is routinely and effectively used. The easiest way to do this is to provide work samples where the accommodation was used in student data folders.

Some examples of accommodations are:

  • Indivdiualized Structured Reminders
  • Math Manipulatives
  • Supplemental Aides (Pictures of: math charts, graphics, science graphics, fraction bars, shapes, money, etc.)
  • Extra Time
  • Oral Administration
  • Content & Language Supports (Online only)
  • Calculation Aids
  • Spelling Assistance
If you have questions about a specific accommodation, including the actual resource, or how to use it, please see Mrs. Helton. You can also see Mrs. Maynard for information about how to document the use of these accommodations.

**SPECIAL NOTE: Accommodations as listed in a 504 or Special Education plan are required to be implemented by law. This is NOT optional. **
