Pittsfield Penguin News
October 2019
Greetings Pittsfield Families,
Happy fall! We are now in the fifth week of school where we are really beginning to settle in and our students are excited about learning! September was filled with a lot of welcoming events that brought our students, families and faculty together. We appreciate our PTO for organizing a fantastic first PTO meeting, where we shared a meal together, voted on the budget, made progress and plans for the year. We are especially grateful to our amazing teachers and faculty for welcoming each and every one of you during the start of the year at Curriculum Night, and the Family Breakfast. If you were unable to attend Curriculum Night, click here to see my presentation.
I SO look forward to all of the wonderful happenings at our school during the autumn season. As we forge ahead, here are some upcoming events and updates:
Fun Run FUNdraiser
The Fun Run FUNdraiser is off to a great start and happening now! A big THANK YOU to our PTO and Fun Run coordinators, Aaron Kraft and Dawn Keech, for organizing this for our school. We are a quarter away from achieving our $10,000 goal. To show our progress, Friday, October 4th is CRAZY HAIR DAY! The Fun Run will take place on Wednesday, October 16th. Feel free to join us during the Fun Run where you will see kids have FUN and RUN. If we meet our school goal all students will receive an extra recess and a visit from a SLUSHIE TRUCK in October! We invite you to sign up to participate in the Fun Run - click on this Registration Link: https://www. getmovinfundhub.com/register? school_uuid=5d4048bc39a17. The money raised helps with “Teacher Grants” so teachers can purchase needed items for their classrooms. The theme this year is “PLEASE”, will you consider to help your child register for the Fun Run and possibly donate or seek donations? Aaron Kraft made an awesome video, check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7dPSHAoZsg&t. Pretty “PLEASE” support our Penguins!
Parent Pick Up Location Change
Starting Monday, October 7th, the parent pick up location will change for all students in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms. Students will exit the building near rooms 104 and 105, near Oakwood St. Click here for the map and details. This change will make the flow of traffic easier so students may exit the building more safely to connect with their families at the end of the day.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent Teacher Conferences officially starts today, October 3rd. Our goal is for our teachers to meet with every single family between now and November 15th. If you didn’t have a chance to sign up with your child’s teacher during Curriculum Night, you may contact the teacher directly in a way that is most convenient for you to schedule a time to meet. We have an ALL SCHOOL
PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE on Thursday, November 7th, 4:30-7:30 p.m. where classroom teachers, special area teachers and support teachers will be available.
School Picture Day
S-M-I-L-E and say C-H-E-E-S-E! Picture Day is Tuesday, October 8th. Picture forms are available in the main office if you’d like to order your child’s picture.
Monthly PTO Meeting Rescheduled
In observance of Yom Kippur, the monthly PTO Meeting is rescheduled for Tuesday, October 15th, 2019, 5:30 p.m. (dinner served), 6:00 p.m. (meeting begins) in the Media Center. School-aged childcare is available for all families. One of the agenda items is to hear more about the upcoming Bond Proposal from some of our district level leaders. Bond information is also available on the website at a2schools.org/2019Bond.
Student Led Morning Announcements
Starting the week of October 7th, students will participate in student led morning announcements. They will lead in saying the date, a welcome greeting, quote for the week, our school’s mission statement, how we care for ourselves and community, the Pledge of Allegiance, any other school announcements and a closing. All students in kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to participate and each grade level will have an opportunity. Students in small groups will lead the announcements based on their own comfort level with public speaking. We will begin with the 5th grade classes and continue through kindergarten throughout the entire school year. Shey will come to the office at 8:58 a.m. during their assigned week. For the kindergarten classes, a small group of students will come to the office daily to lead morning announcements with the assistance of 5th grade students during the last two weeks of school.

Pittsfield is hosting a Meet the Police Chief, Michael Fox on Thursday, October 10th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room. We invite you to attend as we welcome him to our community. Feel free to bring your ideas and questions.
Winter Gear Drive
As we approach colder weather, it’s time to round up any extra winter gear you have at home and donate it to the Winter Gear Drive! Collection boxes will be at the main entrance of the school the weeks of October 21st – 25th and October 28th – November 1st. Families are welcome to pick out any items they may need during these times:
Common Conference Night on Thursday, November 7th, 4:30-7:30 p.m.

Saturday, November 9th, 11:00 a.m. on the playground
We appreciate your donation to our commUNITY! A TON of thanks to Kristen McGlaston for coordinating this for our school.
Bus Tracker
Our district is excited to share news with those students and parents that utilize district-provided bus service. Our school bus partner, Durham School Services has provided an application, Bus Tracker, that allows parents and guardians to view the location of their child(ren)’s bus in real time with relationship to their assigned bus stop. This application is available through a web browser or the app stores. Bus Tracker enables parents and guardians to view multiple stops on an assigned route, including the scheduled arrival time for each stop. The service is free of charge to parents/guardians and provided at no additional cost to the school districts serviced by Durham School Services. Use of the application is voluntary. For more information, to sign-up and create your secure login, or to use the application on your smartphone or web browser, please go to: www.durhamschoolservices.com/durhambustracker and https://m.durhambustracker.com/secure/login. As a reminder, we have a 2019-2020 Pittsfield Family Events Calendar that has our scheduled activities for the school year. Click here.
Raptor Visitor Information System
As part of the Ann Arbor Public School’s commitment to student safety, every school in the
district is instituting a new visitor management check-in system at the main entrance greeter
desk or in the front office. To help us keep track of who is in our schools during the school day we ask that you present your identification, either a driver’s license or identification card, when you visit the school. If you don’t have an identification card the Office Professional or Community Assistant at the high schools will assist you. Once you have presented your identification the first time you will be in the system and will no longer need to present your ID for future visits. This is true for visits to other AAPS schools as well.
The system creates a visitor badge for you to wear while you are visiting the school. Please
remember to check out at the office or desk where the badge was issued upon completion of your visit. The visitor management system also checks your identification against the national sex offender database.
The benefits of a visitor management system for our schools includes:
Up-to-date information about who is in our schools, where they are and the time they
entered, especially important during any type of emergency drill or actual emergency
Situation.
Creates customized visitor badges with photos to easily identify visitors, contractors,
volunteers, parents.
Provides instant and accurate screening off the national sex offender registry and
custom alerts for custody restrictions, banned visitors, etc.
While the district must comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) and the Children’s Internet
Protection Act (CIPA), due diligence was conducted to ensure visitor’s Personal Identifiable
Information (PPI) is secure. Note that the cost for the selected system comes as part of the Michigan State Police School Security grant that AAPS received, the second largest grant award in the state. We are pleased to provide another layer of security for our students and staff during the school day.
Thank you for ALL that you do! At any time, please feel free to contact me through the office, via phone at 734.997.1218, or by email at alston@aaps.k12.mi.us. May we live our mission each and every day "achievement for ALL in a safe, nurturing setting; honoring our diversity!"

Bastante "POR FAVOR" apoyar a nuestros pingüinos!
