HERMAN E. DUMMER NEWSLETTER
APRIL, 2018
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MRS. FORD
This is soooo true! As we start to finish up another year, I would like to thank you for your support, kindness, work, communication and cooperation you have shown which helps us give your children the best education possible. We cannot do this alone. When we face adversity and celebrations as a united front, great things happen. We only have your students for such a short time, but they definitely leave a lasting impression. Our job is not easy and neither is yours. We need each other for support and encouragement to make it through each and every day knowing this is a rough world, but there are so many great people and acts of kindness that really do happen. We need to be those people. We need to do these acts. We need to partner up and make this world see the good! We make a great team! Kindness matters!
Our Parent Group has played an integral part of making our school a wonderful place to be and learn. Some activities that are being planned at this very moment are the Daddy/Daughter Dance, the Mother/Son Bowling, and an end-of-the-year cookout for our students. They are a very hard working, behind-the-scenes group who do much for this school. I can’t thank them enough!

6th Grade Health Requirements for 2018-19 School Year
It’s not too early to start planning for next school year. Below is a list of health requirements for entry into 6th grade. The physical exam and immunization record are due by the first day of school.
· Complete physical exam: Please note that a sports physical does not meet the requirement for the 6th grade physical.
· Up - to - date immunizations to include: Tdap, 2- varicella doses, hepatitis B series, and meningococcal vaccine. Please check with your health care provider to be sure these immunizations are included on your child’s 6th grade physical exam.
· Dental exam: due by May 15, 2019
Health packets were sent home in early March with your child. Health forms may also be found on the district website or picked up in the main office. If you have questions about any of these requirements you may contact Mrs. Meyer, School Nurse at 815-786-8498.
FIELD DAY SHIRTS. THE DEADLINE TO ORDER IS APRIL 20TH. THE ORDER FORM WILL GO HOME WITH YOUR STUDENT AFTER SPRING BREAK.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR READING SPECIALIST, MISS CAMERON
Want to help your child to be a better reader? You don’t have to spend a lot of money to create a wonderful reading environment. As parents and caregivers you play an important role in helping a child to develop as a reader. Families do make a difference.
Research is pretty clear on the point of it doesn’t matter what you read; what matters is how much you read. Our Quarterly Reading Incentive and Book It programs provide two enjoyable ways for students to read at least 20 minutes each day.
Here are some other easy and enjoyable ways to help students and younger readers develop their reading ability.
· Play with magnetic letters. This is a fun way to practice spelling as well as decode words.
· Keep books around the house and in the car so they are readily available to read.
· Comic books, magazines and graphic novels COUNT AS READING!
· Talk with your child about what they are reading. Maybe even start your own family book club.
· For a younger reader, help your child learn the letters and sounds of the alphabet. Occasionally point to letters and ask your child to name them.
· Start a word wall adding all of the unusual words you have learned or heard that day along with the meaning.
· Consider using computer software that focuses on developing phonics and emergent literacy skills. Ex. Ticket to Read is an inexpensive and entertaining computer program parents can order individually to improve phonics, fluency and comprehension.
· Play word games that connect sounds with syllables and words (for example ask “If the letters p-e-n spell pen, what letters would spell hen?).
· Point out words that begin with the same letter as your children's names (for example, John and jump). Talk about how the beginning sounds of the words are alike.
· Use alphabet books and guessing games to give your children practice in matching letters and sounds. A good example is the game, "I am thinking of something that starts with /t/."
· Let your child practice spelling words in cornmeal or sand.
· Choose one day of the week when your child can help you make supper. They can read the recipe.
· Read the book and then watch the movie. Compare and contrast how they are different and alike. Talk about which you like better and why.
· Children take their cues from adults, so let them catch you reading often.
· Set up a cozy reading space in your home for your child to read.
· Let your child decide what he/she wants to read for enjoyment.
· Know your child’s reading level by using the 5 finger rule. Open the book to a page and begin reading. If you find more than three words that give you great difficulty by the end of the page then the book is a wrong fit for you.
THANK YOU
LEARNING CENTER NEWS FROM MRS. LIMON
LEARNING CENTER NEWS
The Dummer School library has been a busy place this month. The students have continued to improve their typing skills during their biweekly visit to the learning center. They work on a web based program from Typing.com. Ask your child how they feel their typing skills have improved since August J I have seen them go from “peck typing” with one finger to learning the correct finger placement and being able to use both hands to type with increased speed and accuracy. They also love the typing games during the last part of class that are fun and yet still are working on typing skills. Another big event for the Dummer Library this month has been the annual Scholastic Book Fair. This event raises money for our school to purchase books for our library. Last year we were able to raise just under $3,000!!! Thank you to everyone who attended the book fair family event before or after the Spring Concert this year. I can’t wait to get the final numbers from Scholastic to find out about another huge success this year!
