Safety in the Parking Lot and When Traveling to and from School
Because of the number of families throughout our District who drive their students to school rather than taking advantage of District buses, many of our parking lots can have more traffic that they are designed to have. The resulting volume of traffic can present serious safety issues. Of importance for all parents to keep in mind is the use of cell phones by drivers picking up and dropping off students. Distracted driving is unsafe on all roads but can be especially dangerous in school parking lots filled with children. Parents should know we care about the safety of their children and, therefore, our parking lots are cell phone-free zones for drivers.
On another safety note and specific to RHK8, please be extra careful when you see students who are walking or riding their bikes to or from school. Scholls Ferry is an especially busy road and one that requires careful attention by all pedestrians and by all who drive there, especially when turning in to the parent drop off loop of our school. We greatly appreciate your careful attention to safety and also of dropping off your student(s) in the lower parking lot when between 8:10 and 8:30am.
Thank you for not using your cell phones when driving, dropping off, and picking up, and for driving as safely as possible both on campus and when en route. Also, thank you for using our District's buses as much as possible. We appreciate your attention to maintaining as safe a situation as possible for each and every student.
Congratulations RHK8!

Student Walk Out
As you are likely aware, the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida has prompted a national discussion regarding school safety and the rights of staff and students to learn and work in a safe environment. One part of this discussion was a media promoted national school walkout at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, this week.
At RHK8 we had a number of middle school students choose to participate in a student-initiated walkout. Middle school teachers and administrators heard from students ahead of time about their plans, and helped them to establish a safe place for students to go during this student-initiated walkout. Administrators and several staff members supervised students until their return to the classroom at 10:17 a.m. Meanwhile, teachers remained in their classrooms during that time, teaching students who chose not to participate in the walkout, and then following the walkout the school day resumed like normal.
Have a wonderful weekend! With appreciation,
Peter
