Upcoming Events & Information from the Career Center
SENIORS:
By the time this newsletter goes out, there will only be a few more days to get scholarships in for the graduation program. Please make a copy, scan, drop off any scholarship awards given, whether you decide to accept them or not. We want ALL scholarships listed in the program!!
Mrs. Cupps will be going into senior classes to have seniors complete a simple survey concerning plans for after graduation. This will include a request for a final transcript to the college of your choice. When final transcripts are ready, usually by the first part of June, the graduation transcript will be sent to the selected college.
Please look over the list of jobs available to seniors for the summer and beyond. This is not the only jobs out there!!! So many to choose from, it has definitely become a job seekers market. I encourage you to have a resume and put yourself out there if you are looking for a job. Please come and see me if you would like help with a resume or interview skills.
The Idaho Dept. of Labor offers workshops on resumes and interviews:
Interactive Interviewing Workshop: Every Tuesday, 2 p.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Boise Office, 317 W Main St.
Resume Workshop: Every Thursday, 3 p.m.-4:15 p.m. also at the Boise Office.
We are also being contacted by many apprenticeship programs (Western Heating & Air, A-1 Heating, Master Rooter, Ted Dumont, etc.) so if you are looking for career opportunities with great pay and benefits, please come in and see me. These companies are local and are willing to pay for the college programs to help you complete your apprenticeship.
CWI New Student Orientation @ Capital: May 14 from 4 p.m.-7 p.m.
New Student Orientation is designed to help incoming students transition to CWI. This program is hosted at Capital. Students who attend the New Student Orientation will have early access to registering for classes and receive admissions, academic advising, financial aid and student affairs help. Students and parents are welcome.
New Student Orientation Sessions are required for all incoming students pursuing an academic degree.
To RSVP: https://cwi_capital.youcanbook.me
Students must also complete the SOAR online prior to coming to New Student Orientation. Bibiana Ramirez, our admissions representative from CWI, will be at Capital to help any student complete the SOAR on Friday, May 4 and Thursday, May 10. Please sign up in the Career Center.
If you cannot attend the Orientation on May 14, you can sign up for other Orientations online at CWI.
Still haven’t completed the FAFSA? Yes, you can and are encouraged to complete the FAFSA at fafsa.gov. Help is available from Mrs. Cupps or call the admissions office of your college for assistance.
JUNIORS:
The SAT results will be released sometime the middle to end of May. Once I know an exact date, I’ll let you know.
I strongly encourage students to take the ACT, in addition to the SAT. Then students have the opportunity to see which one they “like” better and to re-take in the Fall. I STRONGLY recommend students re-taking the SAT and/or the ACT at least once. Students typically do better the second time they take the test and for some schools who give merit scholarships based on ACT/SAT scores this could mean the difference in going or not going to a certain college. Please check with colleges on your list to see if they offer merit scholarships and what their criteria is.
Testing with ACT/SAT should be completed before the end of December to make most deadlines, but once again, please check deadlines with colleges to make sure of their requirements for testing.
Information concerning next year’s ACT can be found at www.actstudent.org and SAT information at www.collegeboard.org.
If your family qualifies free/reduced lunches, please come in to pick up a fee waiver for either test. You will have two fee waivers to use per test.
The summer is coming up and it’s a good time to do some college campus visits. I cannot stress enough how important this piece of the college selection process is!! Students get a good sense if this is the right school for them by walking on campus, staying in the dorms (if possible), talking with faculty, eating in the cafeteria, etc. To take an official tour of campus, call the admissions office and let them know when you will be in their area and what you would like to see on the tour. They will be more than happy to help you see if their school is right for you!
Student who may be using the Common Application for their colleges can begin setting up their account and starting the application. The Common Application is an application used by over 750 colleges around the country. Check out the college’s website to see if they accept the Common App and begin the process. Your application cycle will not begin until August 1 but anything you do now will roll over to the next year’s cycle. Make sure you understand this process and the pieces of the application you need to complete or to have other people complete…like the School Report and the Recommendations.
Please see me if you have any questions concerning Common App.
Sophomores and Juniors:
Don’t have anything to do for the summer…get a job! As I mentioned above it is a job seekers market right now and what better way to make some money and get some work experience than a summer job. There will be a Job Fair here at Capital on Thursday, May 17, sponsored by the Idaho Department of Labor, from 4-6:30 p.m. in the CHS Gymnasium.
Prior to that day, the Idaho Department of Labor will be offering a Resume/Interview workshop for any interested students on Wednesday, May 16 in the Capital Career Center.
