Reading Workshop
This week, we will review Unit 3, "We Learn From Each Other" and will celebrate all we have learned in the past few weeks. As a class, we will review the skills and each child will complete the unit assessments. These assessments will continue to help drive my instruction to support students at their level of understanding. Since this is a review week, the students will not be receiving a new Word Study Principle.
During our reviews, we will once again visit base words and the difference between a prefix and a suffix. Both are: "a letter or letters that change the meaning of a base word." The big difference is that prefixes are at placed at the beginning of a word and a suffix is at the end of a word. As a class, students will create a list of words with prefixes, suffixes, and both. Then to demonstrate their understanding, the will create original sentences for chosen words.
Author of the Month Club
Every student is invited to participate in 2R's very first "Author of the Month Club." My goal is to have students read and enjoy books by a specific author over a month's time. At the end of the March, we will have lunch share for those who would like to attend. It is not required, it is just for fun! We will have a chance to talk about the different books we read, share our favorites and create a shared experience focused around reading and talking about our reading.
I will have a crate of Cynthia Rylant books in the classroom from which the students may borrow and return as they read. Everyone is also welcome to go to the library to find books written by Cynthia Rylant.
Writing Workshop
Our handwriting fine-tuning will continue. The students will complete another activity associated with paragraphs. They will also be introduced to irregular nouns and verbs and asked to write matching words together while focusing on their penmanship. Finally, they will get reading for number writing by writing number words in various languages.
We will delve deeper into various crafts writers use and try to expand their understanding as to how it helps a reader make sense of a story. Using people's names allows the reader to know characters are familiar to the author or main character. Naming places and brand names; streets, stores, etc. allows the reader to know there is familiarity about the setting and things in the story. Also, using brand names can give a sense of time and truth to a story. Finally, incorporating their knowledge of idioms, allows them to add imagery to describe events and people. These are all details that should be used sparingly like the perfect condiment to the perfect meal. It should enhance it and not take over.
