November 2022
Mote's Note - A note from the Principal - Kyla Mote
November is going to be another full month for us at Black Elementary so please see the dates below to mark your calendars. First up is our Fun with Son's event this evening. Then, our Student Council Food Drive begins from the 9th-15th. Nov. 11th we will be celebrating our Veterans with our schoolwide event in the morning. Due to the limited guests we will be sharing this on facebook live for everyone. The following week brings us to our KISS lunches (Kids invite someone special). Please see forms that were sent home Nov. 4th. or see the files below. All forms must be back by the 11th in order to have the lunches run smoothly. We will not be able to accomodate late responses. Also, please note the time changes for lunches on these days, who is participating each day and that if you are not eating our cafe lunch on these days we will not have the space to accomodate general guests during lunches. This means we will not have outside lunches with guests allowed the 16th, 17th, or 18th. Thank you for understanding as we try to bring back a special event that covid took away. The end of the month closes out the Gifted and Talented nomination window - please see the counselor corner below for more information.
In this month of thanks, verbal affirmations is an easy and heart filling way to say thank you! So, thank you for being a wonderful part of our Bearkat community! Thank you for supporting our school, our students, and staff! We would love to have you take a moment to say thank you or positively affirm one of our staff members this month. Please complete the very easy form linked below to say thank you to one or many of our staff members. (one form will need to be completed per person that you would like to say thank you to). If you prefer, you may just send me a quick email to share your thanks for one of our staff and I will make sure they recieve it! Link Here or embedded right below.
Car rider reminders:
Please stay to the side when moving throughout the parking lot so that daycare vans may get through at all times. Also, please do not cut through HEB when entering the line or if you are leaving the school and absolutely must go to HEB right then, please use the second HEB entrance and not the first one to cut through. Thank you so much.

NURSE NOTES
• Our Bearkat Clinic is in desperate need of shorts and long pants size 7-14 for both girls and boys. Please consider donating to the clinic before dropping your student’s old clothes off at a donation spot.
• Hearing and Vision Screening has been completed! Please keep a look out for referrals from the clinic. The district is offering a program (See to Succeed) that provides free eye exams by a physician and free glasses to all students (age 6 and up) who receive a referral. If interested in your student participating, please return the consent forms (attached to the referral) no later than Thursday, November 10th.
We will begin screening our 5th grade girls for scoliosis on Wednesday, November 9th, please have your student wear a sports bra/bathing suit top under their shirt on this day.
• Strep, Covid, and Flu…OH MY! The season is upon us, so keep a watch on your kiddos. Encourage proper hand washing and healthy practices at home and out and about. Symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, persistent coughing, headache, or sore throat should be taken seriously. If you suspect that your child may be showing symptoms of illness, please keep him/her home from school until the symptoms have improved. Also, if your student has a fever at/over 100.0 he/she will need to be kept home until fever free without medication for 24 hours. We greatly appreciate your help in keeping our students and staff healthy!
COUNSELOR CORNER - From our Counselors - Laura Hernandez and Karen Rhymes
ATTENDANCE REMINDERS FROM THE REGISTRAR
Remember to send an excuse note anytime your student is absent.
- Calling in a student absence or emailing the teacher/nurse does not excuse the absence – only a submitted care provider or parent note to the attendance secretary excuses the absence.
- A note from the care provider to the attendance secretary will only excuse the day(s) listed - If your student is out for longer, an additional note from the parent is required to excuse the extra days.
- If your student is sent home by the nurse - a note from a parent is still required to excuse the time your student missed school.
- Absence notes must include:
- student’s full name, date(s)
- dates of absence
- reason for absence
- parent/legal guardian signature
Lenny's Tails:
October flew by! There is always something going on in our school. We did this WatchD.O.G.S. Pizza night. Not only did I think I was the only dog around here, but I also was not allowed to eat pizza. Once I saw the WatchD.O.G.S were humans I felt a little better. All of the dads, uncles, and grandparents that came were able to eat pizza that was donated from Little Caesars and had drinks donated from HEB. Most of the WatchD.O.G.S signed up to come help around our campus. I have seen a few of the students with their WatchD.O.G.S. and they seem so happy.
We had our first book fair of the year. There were so many books there. Family night was a huge success, and it was really neat that day to stay because I was also able to attend the 5th grade performance. They did such a great job.
There was so much dressing up this month too. We had book parade, red ribbon week, Astro’s game days. My neckerchief collection is growing thanks to one of my wonderful 5th grades friends.
Mrs. Mirelez said that November and December are going to be strange months. She said that we get a few weeks off and there are a lot of gatherings with friends and family. She also stated that there will be a lot of food. I really hope they let me try something. Everything they eat smells so yummy, but they never let me have any.
Well, my Bearkat family, I am going to visit some classrooms now. They filled in their letter B for our PBIS B.E.S.T and asked if they could have playtime with me. I am on it! Super excited to get some playtime in.
Please check out my Twitter @BearkatLenny
I do also want to thank my sponsors again for making this life possible.
