Monday Minutes

December 10, 2018

'Tis the season to be tired, stretched thin, and generally worn out. Our school days are full of activity - learning, assessing, managing behavior, etc. On top of that, our personal lives are full of a general hustle and bustle as well. Sometimes when we are worn out, we say or do something that is out of character. I want to take a moment to encourage you to take care of yourself during this very busy time. It is so important to take care of ourselves so that we can take care of others (our students, our teammates, etc). Find a little snippet of time every day, even five minutes, to just be still and rest so that you can recharge!

Instructional Minute - Gamifying Math

So many of you play games in math on a regular basis already. I want to encourage you to continue to do so! Games in math are highly engaging and encourage students to collaborate and problem solve. Another benefit is that you can mix ability groups during a game, which allows students to learn from each other.

Here's a way you might introduce a new math game in your class:

1. Introduce the game and model how to play.

2. Provide students the opportunity to play multiple rounds of the game.

3. Facilitate a class discussion about the various strategies used and what students learned.

4. Formal learning - directly instruct students in a new strategy or concept (for example, students play a game and collect data, then you model how to interpret the data).

5. Assessment - have students play the game again and incorporate the new learning. Circulate, observe, and converse with students to assess their learning.
