KSAT Great Graduate Series

KSAT 12 was at Samuel Clemens High School the morning of April 12th to profile three seniors for its Great Graduate series to run in late-May and early-June.

Gracie LaGasse was diagnosed with severe plaque psoriasis as a young girl, but is overcoming her medical condition to rank 44th in her graduating class and earn a full scholarship to Texas State University this fall.

Betty Stout, who is in the International Baccalaureate program, has been living without her parents involved in her life since she was 12 years old. She has also overcome a medical condition similar to rheumatoid arthritis to finish in the top 20% of her graduating class. She has been accepted into the University of Houston and plans to someday own a business with the specific intent of hiring victims of domestic violence.

The final senior profiled was Matthew Williams. Matthew is in the top ten percent of his graduating class. He has a rare muscle disease, diagnosed as multiminicore myopathy, which causes severe muscle pain and weakness in his lower legs, abdomen and eyes. His condition has caused him to miss school, sometimes for weeks at a time. Matthew plans on pursuing a degree in the health profession to become a pediatric hemotologist. He has been accepted into numerous schools, including Texas A&M, Brigham Young University, and Abilene Christian.

DECA Makes Finals

Fourteen DECA organization members competed in the International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida April 27-30th. For the first time in Clemens and SCUCISD history, a team has made the FINALS. Congratulations to Monique Caso, Nikole Davis, and Miri Deahl! This qualifies Clemens High School for the top eighteen (18!) DECA chapters in the world!

These team members truly embody the Traits of a Graduate and have represented themselves, their families, Clemens, and their community well. A huge thanks to Ms. Lauinger and Mr. Pratt for supporting and leading this awesome group of students.

United Sports 5K Run/Walk

Stormy weather couldn't ruin a fun run benefiting our Buffs United Sports group! The inaugural 5K fun run was moved indoors to the spacious Events Center for a good time to be had by the almost 100 participants. Thanks to all who came out and participated to support our Buffs United Sports!

Buffs Food Pantry Opens

The Buff Pantry, coordinated by our Culinary Arts program, officially opened on April 25th. The pantry provides free food to students, parents, and community members every Thursday from 3:45 PM until 5:45 PM in the J building (back of school near baseball field). The Buff Pantry was recently highlighted by WOAI-TV.

For additional information, please contact Culinary Arts teacher and sponsor, Amanda Tharp, or Communities In Schools Site Coordinator, Sasha Gomez.

Counselors & CBN Collaborate on Video Series

Clemens counselors and Clemens Broadcast Network (CBN) have collaborated on producing a series of videos with the purpose of helping students tackle some of the bigger issues of growing into a young adult.

The Suicide Prevention Series is a 3-part video series aimed at...

  1. addressing myths
  2. recognizing warning signs
  3. identifying risk factors & providing prevention tips

Additionally, a video on teens and dating violence has been produced in order to review statistics and other information provided by the USCDC to help equip teens and others with the skills they need to navigate the world beyond high school.

These videos were made available to students through in-class viewings, as well as posted on our social media feeds. Links to the videos are also provided on the Clemens counselors' Mental Health & Wellness section of their website.
