Remembering 9/11 in Prayer
A Few Words On...
As the leader of St. Stanislaus Kostka Academy, I would just like to share a few words and thoughts on several topics and happenings in our school community.
Remembering September 11
Before coming to St. Stan's, I was a social studies and history teacher at the high school level. Discussing current and relevant historical events was always an emphasis and each year I led lessons to discuss the significance and impact of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 with my students. As time went on, however, my approach to teaching and talking about 9/11 had to change. Trying to ask students "where they were" or "what they were thinking" on that day soon served little purpose as each new class was too young to remember and, eventually, not yet even born on that day.
Over 20 years later, 9/11 is as much a piece of history to our students as the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 was to us as children. Emotional connections and an understanding of how our world changed on that day are not a possibility for our students. This is why it is all the more important for us as educators and parents to share our own experiences with our children, so that all those who lost their lives and/or became heroes on that day are appreciated and not forgotten. I strongly encourage everyone to take some time today to have an age-appropriate conversation with your child to discuss the significance of this day, how it changed our world, and how we can all be better people when we remember and celebrate the heroes from that day. Please consult some of the resources below if you need some assistance in having these conversations at home:
Booster-thon Fundraiser Kick-Off
Tomorrow (Monday) will be the first day of our Booster-thon: Dance Fit fundraiser which will encourage our students and families to raise money for our school by gaining pledges for a school-wide dance party at the end of the fundraiser. Money raised will go towards a long-term plan to create a STEM Lab at St. Stan's Academy where students might have the opportunity to engage in coding, robotics, or 3D printing activities. You are now able to sign-up and begin sharing our campaign.
This fundraising campaign relies heavily on parents simply sharing information with family, friends, and co-workers. I ask that parents share this information with anyone who may support our school, including employers and local businesses who can gain some recognition for their support. The fundraiser will go from Monday, September 12 and end on Tuesday, September 20. During this time, students will have the ability to earn prizes and classrooms can earn special privileges if they reach certain goals each day. It never hurts to start early, so please sign-up your child(ren) today!
School Lockdown and Active Attack Drill
St. Stanislaus Kostka Academy is required to conduct a lockdown drill with the local police department within the first 90 days of school. Although the likelihood of an active attack occurring at St. Stan's is extremely small, we want to be prepared as a school. We do recommend that all students participate in this drill. We understand, however, that drills such as this might be overly alarming and stressful for some students. As such, you may choose to have your child "opt-out" of the drill by completing this Google Form.
If you wish to have your child participate in the drill, you do not need to complete the Google Form. We will conduct this drill at the end of September with the help of our local Police Liaison Officer from the Chicago Police Department. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
Gentle Reminders
Healthy Treats, Birthdays, etc.
St. Stan's Academy is a participant in the federal government's National School Lunch Program. This program allows for many of our families to receive free or reduced-price lunches each day. As such, we must follow certain guidelines pertaining to general health and nutrition throughout the school. Cupcakes, cookies, and other sugar-filled snacks are therefore discouraged. Healthy snacks/treats can be brought in, however, for birthdays or other classroom parties.
Back-to-School Forms & Parent-Student Handbook
It is very important that all families review our Parent-Student Handbook and complete our Back-to-School Forms as soon as you are able. The Handbook has vital information on a variety of topics and the School Forms are necessary to have in cases of emergency. If you have any questions, please contact the Main Office.
