The Lion's Share
September 2018
A Message from the Principal:
Good morning,
It was so great to see so many of you at our Curriculum Nights! I know that with a solid partnership between home and school, the sky is the limit for our students.
Our teachers have dedicated themselves to establishing effective classroom procedures, and developing a relationship with each student during these first few weeks of school. Research shows that before students are ready to learn, teachers have to show students that they care about them. While this is an ongoing process, the foundation has definitely been established.
As we move towards September we can move on to our next set of goals. This year I have challenged teachers to "meet students where they are," and teach from there. By giving assessments to determine prior knowledge, teachers are better able to scaffold and support struggling students, while challenging those that need it. This approach leads to a more personalized education for each student. At Settler's Point (staff and students) success is measured in growth.
I truly feel that it is my job to serve the Settler's Point community, and if there is anything I can do to help you or your student, please contact me.

Parent Pick Up/Drop Off
From the time that our students are released from school, parent pick up is taking less than 15 minutes to get all the cars out of the lot. We think that we can shave a couple minutes more off this time with ensuring that all parents turn right out of our parking lot.
Safety is our number one priority at Settler's, and we feel that this procedure allows for that goal to be realized.
Visitor Sign In....
We have noticed that some parents are using the VIK entrance through the cafeteria without signing in. This will be carefully monitored. Please know that coming onto campus without the visitor's sticker could initiate the school going into lock down.
Thank you in advance for your adherence to this procedure.

Gifted Testing...
All 3rd and 5th grade students will be tested using a "Screener," and then students that score high enough will be given the full assessment. If your student is in one of these grades, you do not need to sign up.
Annual Update...
As of Friday, only 43% of our students have updated their contact information on Infinite Campus. It's imperative that you do this ASAP in case we need to get in touch with you in an emergency situation.
Here are directions for how to update:
Save the Date...
Chorus with Mrs. Hendrickson
Chorus is a singing and performing group that meets before school one morning per week. Students in 3-6th grade are encouraged to join the Chorus. Students practice solfege, sight singing and vocal training in preparation for their concert in December.
The Chorus programs consist of a variety of repertoire of Acapella, two part and harmony songs as well as show choir tunes. Chorus is a wonderful opportunity for students to develop their talents, make new friends and learn music skills.
Chorus is only held during the first semester. Chorus begins at 7:30 am on Wednesday Mornings and runs until the bell rings. Students will leave from Chorus and go to their classrooms.
Students may come to Chorus for one rehearsal to see if it is right for them. Please come and sing with us!
Chorus begins September 12th and ends on December 13th, 2018 at the Holiday concert. The concert begins at 6:00 pm.

This is the main PTSO fundraiser of the fall semester, and last year they earned $15,000. This went towards purchasing multiple SMARTboards for classes, and helping to purchase the Accelerated Reader program for the school.
