Mary's Center Continues Its Partnership w/SEED DC
SEED PCS is excited to remind families that it continues to have a partnership with Mary’s Center. The partnership allows for SEED to provide scholars access to pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing, options counseling, family planning education, and case management care coordination services to interconceptional (any woman/female who is of childbearing age) and perinatal (pregnant) women. These services are confidential and are offered to students who attend DCPS schools through the DOH Health Centers at various DCPS high schools.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING & EXTERNAL OPPORTUNITIES
ScholarCHIPS: SCHOLARSHIPS FOR CHILDREN OF INCARCERATED PARENTS
ScholarCHIPS is a DC-based non-profit that provides college scholarships, mentorship, and a support network to young people in the DC area with an incarcerated parents who are pursuing a college degree. ScholarCHIPS offers a $2,500 scholarship and a $250 book award, renewable for scholars for up to 8 semesters as long as they remain enrolled in a college or university and are in good academic standing.
ScholarCHIPS was founded by LearnServe alumna Yasmine Arrington.

Hands on Plants Science (HOPS) Summer Program - APP DEADLINE: 4/1/19
The United States Botanic Garden (USBG) has hosted hundreds of urban children and teachers in the National Garden for Hands On Plant Science (HOPS). Participants immerse themselves in the natural world; they dangle over the bridge and learn that clean water is critical for plants and all life forms, they explore the power of the sun and learn how plants make their own food, they watch pollinators in action and have the opportunity to wander and wonder. The National Garden becomes an outdoor classroom where students and teachers use microscopes, dissect flowers, analyze soil and learn how seeds travel.
POSITIONS: We will hire four teachers and eight students (must be at least a rising high school junior) for our two-week program. High school students will receive a $500.00 stipend and teachers will be paid on an hourly basis at $30/hr. Persons will only be considered for hire if they are available for both days of the training and all eight days of the program. Due to the length of this program, there can be no exceptions.
PURPOSE: To facilitate a Hands on Plant Science experience for DC youth between the ages of 7 and 12. This two-week program takes place outside in the National Garden. Program staff will gain plant science teaching skills and knowledge, with a special emphasis on hands-on learning.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Attend two day training on June 27 and 28, 2019. Training is all day from 9:00AM -5:00 PM.
- Available to work every day of the program: July 1, 2, 3 and 5 and July 8, 9, 10 and 11. Each of these days begins at 8 a.m. and goes to 1:30 p.m.
- Assist in assembling and physically setting up stations in the National Garden
- Welcome, assist and interact with participating youth and staff
- Master and facilitate one of four field stations each day
- Serve lunch to youth and staff
- Break down stations and pack out
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Work well with children
- Comfortable teaching outdoors and working on your feet for extended periods
- Flexible and able to work in a fast-paced environment
- Possess good communication and interpersonal skills
Final offers are contingent upon successful background check.

GIRLS WHO START SUMMIT - April 6th
Join the first Girls Who Start Entrepreneurship Summit on Saturday, April 6, from 11-2:30 at Halcyon (a social entrepreneurship incubator) in Georgetown. Registration is free and is at www.girlswhostart.org.
Created by girls from Sidwell Friends and Whitman, this summit is designed to inspire high school and middle school girls through showcasing female entrepreneurs and hearing their stories. The diverse speakers include:

Unleashed Conference: Defining Your Power, Purpose and Passion
This annual conference is for girls in grades 6-12. This represents the sixth year in Washington, DC and second year in Baltimore, MD. The Washington, DC event is May 4th from 8am - 2pm at Catholic University. Our keynote is Miss Cordelia Cranshaw (Miss DCUSA). The Baltimore, MD event is April 27th from 8am - 2pm at Coppin State University and entrepreneur, chef and owner of Trade Street Jam (recently featured in Essence magazine) will be the keynote.
The conference features the opportunity for high school seniors to compete for book and college trunk scholarships as well. Admission is free with 3 school supplies which will be donated to local schools.

Jr. Mentor Internship w/The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)

- Duration: Three (3) week program + One (1) week training = 4 weeks total

Position Description: Jr. Mentors are a crucial component of the SEEK Program. They assist in classrooms of twenty to thirty students, by reviewing STEM educational material with students in small groups. Jr Mentors will also aid in the implementation of classroom policies and procedures, to help promote a positive learning experience for learners. Jr. Mentors will work closely with Site Leadership aiding the team in an administrative role.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Enthusiastically and effectively assist in teaching of engineering curriculum to students
- Reinforce lessons presented by SEEK Mentors by reviewing material with students one-on one or in small groups inside a classroom environment
- Aid in the implementation of the SEEK programs policies and classroom rules to help promote constructive student behavior
- Participates in classroom activities and assists with daily curriculum instruction
- Escalate any issues to Lead Mentor, when appropriate
- Assists Mentors with recordkeeping, student attendance and grading of assignments
- Support overall implementation of the SEEK program through additional duties as assigned

The Accounting Career Awareness Program was established in 1980 by the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) to increase the understanding of accounting and business career opportunities among high school students from underrepresented ethnic groups.
Computer Information Systems career Awareness Program (CISCAP)

CISCAP is an intensive one-week residential program for rising high school juniors and seniors who have an interest in computers, business, or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) discipline. This enriching week provides exposure to the possible range of careers in Information Systems, as well as an opportunity to attend college preparatory classes. The goal of CISCAP is to encourage and assist high school students from under-represented minority ethnic groups to attend college and consider selecting Computer Information Systems as a possible major.
Summer Actuarial Program (SAP)
July 14-19, Residential
The Summer Actuarial Program is an educational enrichment experience in mathematics, statistics, computers, business, and actuarial careers for exceptional mathematics high school juniors. The program is funded by the Joint CAS/SOA Committee on Minority Recruiting, insurance companies, actuarial consulting firms, and Howard’s Center for Insurance Education. It is devoted to helping strong mathematics students improve their skills and providing information about business and actuarial careers.
Summer Entrepreneurial Enrichment Program (SEEP)
July 14-19, Residential
SEEP is an intensive one-week residential program for rising high school juniors and seniors who have an interest in entrepreneurship. The enriching week provides exposure to business ownership, an entrepreneurial mindset, and campus life, with the opportunity to attend college preparatory classes. The goal of SEEP is to encourage and assist high school students from under-represented minority ethnic groups to attend college and consider becoming entrepreneurs, while thinking about how college fits into that plan.
Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) Program (current 3rd thru 5th graders)
The SEEK Program is designed to be a fun and engaging educational experience, led by NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) engineering students and technical professionals dedicated to pursuing professional excellence and giving back to the community. The SEEK program utilizes a hands-on design curriculum. Students will work in teams, using their knowledge to solve problems and create products while discovering the underlying math and science principles involved in these processes. Each week, the students will take on a new project, culminating with a presentation, design competition and physical competitions that all parents are encouraged to attend.
This (3) three-week program will be open to students who are current 3rd thru 5th graders. The program will be held at local elementary schools and will include 125 students in each grade level, for a maximum total of 375 students served per program(varies per site). 50 Collegiate mentors will help to facilitate a full-sized program.
This program is a commuter-based program for students, Monday thru Friday, 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.

Attendance Matters!
Please remember to use the attendance email, attendance@seedschooldc.org to inform the school about absences and lateness. Starting Monday, January 15th families will receive a daily automated email and text when their scholar is marked absent for the day.
Vision Services for Students Enrolled in DC Medicaid
Without proper detection and diagnosis, poor vision may impact a student’s behavior, attendance, and academic success. If a student is enrolled in DC Medicaid, vision services are available through the child’s primary care provider. Under DC Medicaid, annual eye examinations and most eyeglasses or contact lenses are completely covered. If referred by a primary care provider or school nurse, DC Medicaid will also cover examinations and vision services by specialists. Language services and transportation to and from appointments are available when scheduled in advance.
