Improving Race Relations
History of Slavery
Slavery began when European merchants started the Triangular Trade. The Triangular Trade was a three way trade between Europe, Africa, and The New World. Slave Ships were ships meant to transport slaves to The New World from Africa. These Ships had terrible living conditions with diseases and starvation. Slaves were needed because The New World had a lot of farmland and grew a lot of crops. There were more slaves in the south because the south had great farmland for cotton. Slavery grew with the invention of the cotton gin; this allowed there to be much more cotton made.
Slaves in America were treated poorly. Slaves were whipped if they did not cooperate. Slaves were not allowed to go to school or have any education at all. Most weren't aloud to have a bible or go to church. Only the less-strict masters allowed that. The stricter masters would punish you for even the smallest things.
It took until 1865 for slavery to be illegal in the United States with the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The Slave Trade Act made it so that you can not trade for slaves anymore. Lincoln did not want to get rid of slavery at first he just wanted to prevent it from spreading. Later on Lincoln hated slavery and wanted to end it completely.
My Plan to End Discrimination
The legacy of slavery has contributed to these racial tensions. It is very hard to forget about our countries history of treating blacks these ways. We treated them so badly that it just can't be forgotten. We also learn about it in class every year so it in nearly impossible to forget. Many people still discriminate against blacks.
The one idea i have to improve race relations in america is to teach students at young age that it is okay to be different. We will pass a law that makes schools have a lesson on this topic. Parents would have to help also by letting them be around people of a different race when they are young.
