Avian Influenza in Washington County

4-H Families & Volunteers,

Please read the information in the link below from Nebraska 4-H Program Director, Kathleen Lodl, regarding information about the avian influenza as it pertains to the most recent case found in Washington county. https://acrobat.adobe.com/link/review?uri=urn:aaid:scds:US:05447779-3b5b-301f-b5fd-cb38a7b90f77

Our office receives communication from the USDA through the state 4-H office and we will share any additional information we receive with you as it comes in. Please be aware of the bio security best practices. All youth who participate in a 4-H livestock project are required to go through YQCA certification - this would be a great place to start in refreshing your knowledge on those best practices. You can find additional information here: https://extension.unl.edu/statewide/hall/highly-pathogenic-avian-influenza-hpai-in-nebraska/

YQCA Training

Youth exhibiting BEEF, DAIRY CATTLE, DAIRY GOAT, MEAT GOAT, HOG, SHEEP, POULTRY, and RABBITS at the Washington County Fair, Fremont 4-H Expo, and Nebraska State Fair are required to be YQCA certified by June 15 of the current year to be eligible to exhibit.

To create and login to your new YQCA account go to https://yqcaprogram.org/

Teen Tractor Safety Courses

Federal law prohibits children under 16 years of age from using certain equipment on a farm unless their parents or legal guardians own the farm. However, certification received through this course grants an exemption to the law allowing 14- and 15-year-olds to drive a tractor and to do field work with certain mechanized equipment. Teens 14 or 15 years of age who work on farms or others who are interested in learning about safe farming practices are encouraged to register for the course. For more information or to register, visit go.unl.edu/tractorsafety
