Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
I repeat the following message each year at this time. It just seems to perfectly fit the season. Happy Holidays!
I first read the Paradoxical Commandments when they appeared in my school newsletter in 1987 when I was a first grade teacher at Christa McAuliffe Elementary School in Shawnee Mission. At that time, they were attributed to Dr. Karl Menninger (nationally known psychiatrist from Topeka). I kept that newsletter and periodically printed the Paradoxical Commandments in my own parent newsletters once I became a principal in 1991. Over the years, I began to wonder who really wrote them because in addition to Dr. Menninger, I had heard that possibly Dr. Charles Swindoll (Christian pastor, author, and radio show host) or even Mother Teresa had authored them.
But now I know!
After reading Anyway: The Paradoxical Commandments, I know that they were written by Kent M. Keith. He wrote them in 1968 while in college at Harvard. A “paradox” is an idea that is contrary to popular opinion; something that seems to contradict common sense and yet is true. The specific commandments grew out of his own experience and observations of life. The Paradoxical Commandments subsequently spread all over the world and have been used by millions of people.
Mother Teresa put the Paradoxical Commandments up on the wall of her children’s home in Calcutta. The fact that the commandments were on her wall was reported in a book compiled by Lucinda Vardey, Mother Teresa: A Simple Path, which was published in 1995. As a result, some people have incorrectly attributed the Paradoxical Commandments to Mother Teresa.
As we enter the Holiday Season, I think it is a good time to once again share the Paradoxical Commandments written by Kent M. Keith. They appear below. They are a favorite of mine.
Sincerely,
Dr. Heck
The Paradoxical Commandments
The Paradoxical Commandments by Kent M. Keith
People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.
If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.
The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.
The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.
People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.
What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.
People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.
Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

Early Childhood Slots Available
The Early Childhood Disabilities program of the Olathe Public Schools incorporates typically developing children into the program. These students are referred to as “Peers”. Definition of a “peer” for the ECD program includes children that do not have, or are not suspected of having a disability. Eligibility to be considered, or to maintain status as a peer in this program requires meeting this definition. The Olathe Public Schools believes it is important to provide preschoolers with special needs, (Speech/Language delays, behavior concerns, fine and gross motor delays, hearing impairments, genetic disorders, etc.) the opportunity to learn with peers who are typically developing.
The application process for the 2018 -2019 school year begins on January 9, 2018. Children must be three or four on or before August 31st in order to participate in the upcoming school year. Children must speak and understand English and also be toilet trained.
Benefits your child can receive by being a peer participant:
· More positive/accepting attitudes about people with disabilities
· More social skills
· Equal, if not greater, developmental progress
· Access to a highly qualified teacher
· Good student to teacher ratio
For information about the application process contact Kim Russell at 913-780-7341 or by email: peerapprequest@olatheschools.org. There are no waiting lists for future years.
