Haverford Happenings
April 2023
HHS Robotics Team are the Champions!
The Haverford HS Robotics team placed 1st in the FIRST District Championship on March 12th. Combining the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology, FIRST Robotics Competition is the ultimate Sport for the Mind. High-school student participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have.”
Under strict rules, limited time and resources, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors. It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. You can follow them on Instagram @frcteam484 (Roboforce)
Facilities Feasibility Information
At its regular monthly meeting on March 16, 2023, our School Board voted to authorize the district to enter into an agreement to purchase a 9-acre property behind Coopertown Elementary School. It is not uncommon for school districts to purchase land years in advance of construction when an opportunity to do so near or adjacent to a school becomes available. Further, a parcel this size is rare in Haverford. You will find more information about the potential transaction in the communication on our website. The agreement provides a 90-day due diligence period in which studies will be performed to determine the extent to which the land is suitable for the construction of a school. The District will engage and contract with consultants, engineers, architects, appraisers, and other professionals to properly investigate and inspect the property.
Continued discussion of our facility needs as identified in the recently completed facility feasibility study will occur at the Finance & Facilities Committee meeting on April 11, 2023.
More information can be found on our website Facilities and Maintenance.
Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) Renewal
Your Medicaid renewal letter is coming. Don’t miss it!
There is a major healthcare coverage change happening that will impact students across the country who currently rely on Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for
health insurance.
- Since the pandemic’s Public Health Emergency began in March 2020, children and families enrolled in Medicaid have not been required to complete renewal paperwork in order to stay covered.
- Beginning April 1, this continuous coverage protection will lift, and states will resume reviewing eligibility for all people enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP to ensure they still qualify.
- To reduce loss of health coverage, it is important that parents act quickly to confirm or update their contact information with the State Medicaid agency and provide the necessary information to complete their Medicaid renewal when notified.
- Families could be notified about their renewal paperwork at any point this year or early next year.
More information and links are available on our website Medicaid Renewal.
Coopertown, We’re Going Places!
The Annual STEAM Day (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) theme at Coopertown Elementary School this year was “Coopertown, We’re Going Places"! It combined the science of movement with a discussion of careers that involve specialized vehicles. As part of the day of learning, they displayed vehicles used in various professions. The vehicles were parked in the front of the building and the students were engaged by each vehicle's professionals to see the specialized aspects needed for the jobs entailed.
Vehicles of the Coopertown STEAM Walk included: Oakmont Fire Truck, Narberth Ambulance, Police Car SWAT Vehicle “Bear Cat”, SDHT Propane School Bus, Heavy Wrecker, Backhoe Dump Truck with Plow/Salter, Utility Body with Tow Lift, Kuboto ATV with Plow Infield Baseball Groomer, Ventrix Field Mower Zero-Turn Mower, and Township Trucks.
Thank you to our SDHT Facilities Department, Transportation Department, Haverford Township employees, police, fire, Narberth ambulance, and K and S towing. So many volunteers from the community came out to celebrate "Coopertown We're Going Places". It was a wonderful day celebrating careers as well as the unique trucks used in those professions.
HHS College and Carer Fair
Haverford High School hosted the annual College & Career Fair. Nearly 100 both national and international four-year and two-year colleges/universities both were in attendance as well as trade schools and military academies. Students had the opportunity to explore, research, and chat 1-on-1 with admissions counselors including American College Dublin, US Naval Academy, University of Tennessee, University of Buffalo, Rizzieri Aveda School for Beauty and Wellness, and the CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange. See the full list of attendees here.
PSSA Dates
All students in grades 3rd through 8th are expected to take the PSSA in April. The PSSA is a standardized assessment used to measure students’ grade level achievement and growth from the past year.
Assessment scores represent a snapshot in time of student performance and should not be considered the sole indicator of student achievement. Data obtained from each assessment serves as one of the tools for planning school programs, designing curriculum and instruction, and providing information to the public.

Passover April 5 - 13th
Give Me 5! Five Facts about the Celebration:

- Passover begins and ends at sundown.
- One of the most important Passover rituals for observant Jews is removing all leavened food products (known as chametz) from their home
- On the first two nights of Passover, families and friends gather for a religious feast known as a seder.
- During the seder, the youngest child recites the four questions, which ask what distinguishes this special night from all other nights.

Give Me 5! Five Facts about the Celebration:
Eid al-Fitr is commemorated after the end of the Holy month of Ramadan when Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset.
