Welcome back scholars and learning coaches! We truly hope everyone enjoyed the winter holiday season and some well deserved time off. We are very excited for 2019 and have many several special events planned for the rest of the school year.
As a reminder, this is the final month of Semester 1. Let's end the semester strong!

CCS NEWS ~ January is National School Board Recognition Month and Compass Charter Schools (CCS) is celebrating its community volunteers who dedicate countless hours and resources to ensure quality education is available for scholars. Read the full press release.
ENERGY BUS ~ Energy Bus tip of the week: Take a moment to let your teachers and classmates know you appreciate them! Also, don’t forget to check out this week’s Make a Difference Monday Message from the Energy Bus, provided by J.J. Lewis, our Superintendent & CEO! Create your own one word and share on social media, tagging both @CompassCS and @EnergyBusSchool. AND as we start 2019, consider completing this Positive Vision Planning Sheet!
GEOGRAPHY BEE ~ We will be hosting the Geo Bee at our Orange County Learning Center (OCLC) in Santa Ana on Thursday, January 24. All 4th-8th graders are invited to participate. The Geo Bee will begin at 1:15 pm in the Parish Hall. Click here for study information.
NAVIGATORS’ COMMUNITY TOUR ~ Scholars under our San Diego charter who are interested in joining our Navigators' Community at our Orange County Learning Center (OCLC) in Santa Ana are invited to take a tour of the Center and classes this Thursday, January 10 at 9:30 am. The visit will last about an hour. For more information contact Linda Larson at llarson@compasscharters.org.
PHOTO CONTEST ~ CCS has entered a photo contest organized by our insurance carrier, Nonprofits Insurance Alliance! Find our photo entry here and be sure to vote once each day this week, between January 7-11!
SCHOLAR LEADERSHIP COUNCIL SURVEY ~ As a reminder, the Scholar Leadership Council needs your help! We want to under the best ways to serve our fellow scholars, and ask that you complete this short survey to share your feedback.Please complete the survey by this Wednesday, January 9.

SPELLING BEE ~ We will be hosting the Scripps National Spelling Bee at our OCLC next Tuesday, January 15. TK-5 will have preliminary rounds starting at 11 am in the cave of wonders; 6-8th graders and finalists from first round will begin at 1:15 pm in the Parish Hall. Click here for word lists.

BOOK CLUB ~ January 22nd- Book club w/ Ms. Beamish or Mrs. Hardy will be held during lunch. Ms Beamish- will be discussing, Dinosaurs Before Dark and Mrs Hardy- will be discussing, The Cay by Theodore Taylor. Bring your lunch. A yummy snack will be provided
VENDOR RELATIONS
All About Reading is a complete program that teaches phonics, decoding, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension in a multisensory, fun, and engaging way. Over the years, they have had repeated requests from users asking for full color. They are delighted to announce that the new Color Edition of All About Reading Levels 1-4 will be available January 10, 2019!
The color edition includes:
Updated full-color teacher's manuals with expanded appendices, tips, and introductory materials
Full-color activity books that add even more fun to lesson time
Heirloom-quality readers with full-color interiors that help bring the stories to life
Already own a previous edition of AAR? Don't worry! The new Color Edition materials can be correlated for use with the current black-and-white editions, so you can easily mix and match old and new editions.
The Color Edition releases on January 10, 2019, and the price will go up by $15 per level, so if you'd like to fill in your collection with the black-and-white editions, be sure to get orders to your EF by January 8 to so they can get to AAR by January 9 to avoid a price increase. COUNSELING SERVICES
ACT REGISTRATION DEADLINE APPROACHING
Juniors, the registration deadline for the February ACT exam is this Friday, January 11! You can find more information about the ACT and the registration at www.act.org. If you are in need of a fee waiver, contact Ms. Olson at molson@compasscharters.org.
FREE CASH FOR COLLEGE WORKSHOPS ~ Through the March 2 Cal Grant deadline, scholars and families can attend FREE Cash for College Workshops across California for help completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act (CADAA) and Chafee Grant for Foster Youth applications.
RACE TO SUBMIT ~ The California Student Aid Commission presents the Race to Submit Initiative, which encourages eligible high school scholars to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the California Dream Act Application (CADAA). Filling out these financial aid applications is the first step towards college success and helps scholars qualify for federal and state aid to help pay for college.
